I am a freshman in HS this year, and due to a scheduling conflict, I cannot take the Japanese 1 this year. I really wanted to take Japanese. I planned to take Japanese all 4 years of HS, but because Japanese won't work with my schedule without sacrificing too much, I have to take french 1 instead. I plan to make up my Japanese 1 over the summer and start out Sophmore year in Japanese 2 with everyone else.I know colleges want to see 4 years of a foreign language. Would one year of one language and 3 years of another still count? Am I screwed if I don't take 4 years of the SAME LANGUAGE in school? This is what my transcript will look like:

Grade 9: French 1
Grade 10: Japanese 2
Grade 11: Japanese 3
Grade 12: Japanese 4 (Also called IB Japanese)

I don't think this is really a problem, as long as you show commitment to one language (or two if you're really good at languages and/or want to be trilingual)

Just do a search on the college website asking what they require for admissions. Or tell me the school if you can't find it (I'm generally good at navigating college websites).

First off, you need to calm down and enjoy your freshman year!!! I mean yes you need to be thinking about these things, but stop stressing yourself out. You'll burn yourself out by your junior year if you're not careful.

Most colleges only require 3, you'll be fine. :)

my computer is being ridiculously slow right now, so i cant check, but i seem to remember that on collegeboard, if you search for the college, and click the admission tab, it will have the list of recommended/required high school prep. if it isnt on the collegeboard website, it might be on the premium usnwr site. i know i have seen those charts somewhere. it could also be on princetonreview.com, maybe.

You're taking 4 years of Japanese, it just so happens one of those 'years' is during the summer. No school I know (including 'the Ivies') requires more than 4 years of a language. Not to mention most of those 'requirements' are actually 'recommendations'

I took two years of German (at a CC), I assume I'll be fine for UCs.
And you will get 4 years of credit for Japanese, so you'll be more then fine...you'll be excellent.

I just looked up yale... couldn't find anything on their site (which frustrates me greatly......). But I remember reading one of their brochures once, and it said "3 years strongly suggested" so you're good.

I just found a page on the yale website talking about f.l. college req's. Part of it mentioned that some students have never taken a foreign language in high school...
