Most universities recommend have two years of foreign language in high school, but my school only offers AP Spanish Literature, and AP Spanish Language. Would it be fine if I took both in one year or would it be a problem since I wouldn’t have taken them subsequently. Also, would it be fine if I only took one of these two APs?
Is AP Spanish Language an introductory course or does it require a previous Spanish 1 type class (possibly taken in middle school)?
How many years of Spanish have you had? Are you already quite good at Spanish, and if so is this from classes in school or for a different reason?
I don’t understand why you would be taking AP Spanish unless you have already had more than two years of Spanish, or speak it at home.
I’m hispanic and also my middle school didn’t offer spanish courses so I have no years previously in Spanish classes, but I have spoken it for most of my life. My family speaks Spanish most of the time with only my siblings sometimes speaking english.
Does your HS offer foreign languages other than Spanish? While colleges will generally consider completion of AP Spanish as the equivalent of 4 years, the HS might have its own graduation requirement that would not be met simply by being a heritage speaker.
Nope, just AP Spanish Literature, and AP Spanish Language, no other foreign languages. There might’ve been others before, but the teachers have left.
In which case, I would suggest talking to the GC and ask what other students from your HS who are attending colleges you are targeting have done. If all your target colleges ask for 2 years, then you might be OK with just taking one of the Ups, but if any request 3+, you might be better off with both.
