This is my foreign language track:

9th - Spanish 2 Honors
10th - Spanish 3 Honors (skipping Spanish 4 Honors)
11th - AP Spanish Language
12th - (exhausted Spanish curriculum, most likely will not offer AP Spanish Literature)

I'm not intending to be a Spanish major, but I'm good at the language and I enjoy it, as well. However, if I plan on applying to HYP, Penn, Columbia, Northwestern, JHU, etc. would it hurt my chances? I'm taking advantage of what my school offers in terms of curriculum, but I know they prefer 4 years of 1 language... HELP?

Sigh. I imagine that you took Spanish 1 before 9th grade? If so, you have 4 years of a language. It won’t hurt you to not take Spanish senior year if your school does not offer any further courses. If you still want to study Spanish, do an independent study of AP Spanish Literature.

You made it through Spanish Level IV (AP) so yes, you already have “4 years of a foreign language.”

I think you’re fine. Obviously you didn’t bail out in the easier levels of Spanish. I wouldn’t worry about it :D

Also, I believe part of the counselor recommendation or whatever that your counselor has to fill out will list the highest course available at your school in each subject, so they’ll know you maxed out at AP Spanish Lang and that no higher course was offered at your school.

Do a Search for ‘foreign language’, you’ll find numerous threads almost identical to yours. And the answer is always the same, it’s the level you reach, not the number of years in HS. You’re fine, sleep well tonight.

At first I thought it said that you DID intend to be a Spanish major, but since you’re not, and you’ve taken through level four, and your school doesn’t offer higher, you’re fine. So fine.
