Is it totally required to take two years of a foreign language? I did not know that it was a requirement to take two years and I still want to get into a CSU. Advice please?
If you do not meet the requirement of 2 years, then your application will not be reviewed. There are other ways to fulfill the foreign language requirement:
- A score of 3,4 or 5 on an AP Language Test
- A score of 490 or above for an SAT II Language test with listening
- 2 semesters of a community college foreign language course
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/AdmissionHandbook.pdf pages 7-9 describes the frosh admission requirement for foreign language in the CSU system. Can be satisfied by:
- High school year 2 foreign language.
- College semester 2 foreign language, or college semester 1 that is listed in the catalog as being equivalent to high school year 2.
- AP score of 3 on a foreign language test.
- SAT subject score of 440-490 (depending on the language) on a foreign language test.
Plus a few other ways that are mostly applicable to native or heritage speakers of a non-English language.
You are kinda out of time. Your application must reflect a way to meet all the a-g requirements by the end of your Sr year. Unless you are already fluent in another language, testing out of the requirement is pretty unlikely. CCs are certainly a viable path. UNR is very close to CA and discounts tuition for California applicants, has no language requirements and is worth a look.
Good luck
