UCD doesn’t offer forensic sciences as a major, but they do offer anthropolgy as a minor. I realized that anthropology has an impact in a career as a forensic scientist, and I was thinking of minoring in Anthropology, but I’m not sure what I should do about my major.
Majors offered that I thought could be helpful as an undergrad:
Biochem and Molecular Bio major
Cell Biology Major
Genetics and Genomics Major
Microbiology Major
OR!!!
I can major in Anthropology and minor in:
Biological Sciences
Chemistry
I will be talking to a major advisor, but I wanted another opinion. Thank you.
I think you’re wise to adapt one of the more traditional bio related majors. IMHO, forensic science is faddish – due to TV crime dramas – and has little correlation to the actual labor marketplace. While also consulting a major advisor, perhaps you can see if you can speak with people in law enforcement or actual forensic medical services professionals and ask their opinion of the 1000s of bachelors degree holders in “forensic science” and see what it really takes and what job prospects truly are.
Two related examples: my brother is a prof at an accredited art & design school. He says about 80% of graduates (after 4 years of not too small tuition) are no longer in the field after five years. You can bet that’s not in their shiny brochures.
My wife is a gym manager: when hiring, she’s amazed at the many college grads in sports exercise-type majors who think their first job will earn them $30K when the labor market if flooded w/people working for $10/hr with no degree whatsoever.
