Ok, so DS and I sat down and did our first FAFSA tonight and it went really smoothly until we realized we didn’t do the state application at the end before closing the confirmation page. FAFSA says you can only access the link in the confirmation page and there is no way to get back to it, so what do we do now? Wait until it processes, then go in and do some kind of correction so we get a new confirmation page?
Wait until it processes. See if you can do the state thing then. If not, call the state group and ask them what to do.
If you put what state, someone here can probably tell you what to do.
It’s Minnesota. I went to their website for the state grant and it just says you apply by filling out the application in the FAFSA, no alternative method given. DS contacted FAFSA through the chat feature and they were no help. She just said they don’t deal with state grants and we should contact our school. I don’t think she was understanding his question at all.
I guess we just sit and wait. I’m hoping if we go in and correct something like change an asset amount by a dollar or something benign like that it will give us a new confirmation page and link.
This is what FAFSA says about state applications:
Some states allow Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information to be transferred directly into their state student financial aid application to save time.
If your state does this, you will see a link to transfer your information on the “Confirmation” page after you submit your FAFSA. You can only link to your state application from your “Confirmation” page, so be sure to look for the link there after you have submitted your FAFSA. You cannot return to the “Confirmation” page later to access the link.
In NY if you forget you can just go to the state website to do it. Check with your state organization to see what to do.
I sent MN Office of Higher Education an email, but there is nothing on the website except “fill out the FAFSA” for how to apply. Maybe I’m in the wrong place though.
I heard back from the state. They said the link was for a MN State Grant questionnaire and the U of M campuses don’t require that is filled out. Since he’s only applying to two U of M schools we don’t need to worry about it. The FAFSA is the application. Phew.
