What are some "good" foreign languages at UW? When I say good I'm speaking about the professor's ability to teach fluently and the depth the students comprehend from each class. NOT how fancy and adorable the language sounds to the ear.. I have a strong desire to learn Chinese or continue my studies in Spanish (did three years in high school) but if other languages are prevalent in UW than those two, I am totally open to consideration. Thanks in advance!!! :)

Was going to ask the exact question. And about study abroad.

I heard Chinese is really hard at UW, but you also learn a lot, and it’s one of the better programs in the US. I took French and Japanese and was pleased with my teachers for the most part. I’ve heard Spanish is fine, but the department is hard to deal with.

chinese and japanese are quite popular. i’m not taking either however.

“I’ve heard Spanish is fine, but the department is hard to deal with.”

I would love to hear more elaboration on the above.

Since this thread is here…
Anyone know about Russian?
There’s no reason for me to take it so if it sucks, it doesn’t matter.
I just really kinda wanna learn Russian…
(or continue the German I quit after sophomore year…)
Thanks :)

^well since you mention it, I happen to be taking first year russian right now. for 101/102/103 there are 4 or 5 different classes of an average of 15 or so (if you take the night class you likely won’t have half that many). in 201/202/203 there are only 2 classes of 15-20. i would recommend some teachers over others but i think it’s a good program in general.

Planning on taking Japanese =)

Im planning on taking Spanish, since I’ve studied for 4 years already. How is the Spanish department at UW?

More comments directed towards the Spanish and Chinese departments please…
