Formal wear at Brown

I’m going to be a freshman at Brown this fall, and I was wondering if I would ever need a suit or tux there, and if so, how often. Mostly I’m concerned about whether it would make sense to buy one. Thanks.

I think at any college it would be nice to have a suit... I don't know if you would really need a tux. Maybe when you are a junior or senior a tux would be a necessity, but now a suit or two I think would suffice. Note: I am still in prefrosh.

I've had no cause to wear either for school stuff. Personally, I'd always recommend having a good suit, but I think you'd be fine if you bought a sports jacket.

You'll need a suit when you grow up but until then I'd say no unless you're going to the Gala or something, but you can just rent one.

Tuxes can be rented for events like Gala (a formal dance held every spring semester). A suit might be better to own maybe your junior or senior year if you applying to internships or jobs.

Damn you Jack, stealing my thunder!! :-P

Son has one black suit which he has worn a few times at school. He has even worn just the black pants when he has had to (ushering a show, performing) and even the jacket by itself. It is something you might need, but I can't imagine needing a tux.

Totally get a suit. It's a good long-term investment. You never know when the occasion arises, and when it does you'd want to take your time in picking a nice one.

if you aren't going to have a legit suit, you need to at least have a blazer, shirt, tie, khakis outfit.

this may be the weirdest thread i've ever come across. dude cross that bridge when you get to it!
