Hi everyone! I created a Facebook group for Foundation Fellows finalists that will be interviewing down at UGA next weekend. I’m so excited to meet all of you!

Send me a PM for the link.

UGA wants to keep their yield up so they don’t offer the Fellowship to the most highly qualified students for fear of rejection. Well, they lost probably one of the best candidates they’ll ever see due to this policy. Enjoy your mediocre Fellows UGA.

Alicia: I think if you look at the stats, the accomplishments, and details of the past Ramsey and FF recipients, you will see that your idea does not hold water. Why would a scholarship program like this not want the best students based on their (not other individuals) determination of which students are the best in their applicant pool.

Alicia- I am sorry you did not make it to the interview stage. There are MANY well qualified applicants that apply. As GAdawg pointed out FF/Ramseys have impressive stats. As for yield- the fellowship office work hard to balance the class. The yield was slightly higher last year than previous. I think there are 26 Fellows in the class of 2016, 17 in class of 2015. The intent was to raise the number of fellows in class of 2016, there were more invited to the interview weekend. 61 invited this year.

If you had the competitive stats to apply for the FF, I am sure you will have some nice opportunities that will help compensate for the disappointment you feel now. My d was disappointed when doors closed for her on some scholarships, but right round the corner another one opened… the fellowship @UGA.

Agree with Gibson1514 who gives very good advice. Also, sour grapes stain so get rid of them before moving on to other opportunities.

My daughter interviewed with Gibson’s daughter. Superior stats aside, what an amazing group of talented and interesting individuals! My D loved everything about FF but a professor at Harvard tipped the scale. UGA didn’t seem to consider she might choose another school over FF then and I’m pretty sure they don’t now.

getalifemom- I remember your d! She had amazing choices.

How is she doing? I read something the other day that made me think of her. If I recall she was your youngest. I think you had 2 older kids already in college. Have they graduated?

@GADawg - you are wrong and we have it from the horse’s mouth. A FF from my son’s school turned down the UGA scholarship two years ago for Harvard. Last year two Ramsey’s from his school turned them down, one for Yale and one for Stanford. College counselor at the school found out after talking to UGA my son was being “punished” because UGA figures he would go to a more prestigious school, turning UGA down if he were offered the scholarship. Her words were UGA wants to keep their “yeild up”. My son is a finalist for the Jefferson at University of Virginia and Danforth at Wash U in St. Louis. So he does have other opportunities - some would say better opportunities. But after hearing a presentation by Jessica Hunt in Athens and meeting David Williams at his high school, he really wanted to go to UGA. The purpose of the UGA scholarships is to attract those highly qualified students. Very disappointing. Call it sour grapes if you want…we are VERY sour on Georgia.

My concept of “the horse’s mouth” is coming directly from the source, not coming from someone who spoke to someone at UGA. Did your counselor speak to David Williams, the DOA, or someone else who actually makes the decisions, or someone else, and was this her interpretation of the conversation. You said “her words were UGA wanted to keep the yield up”, not a decision maker of the FF program. I am not trying to pick a fight, but you have to see all of the applicants and the selected ones to make a determination of this sort, not just your son’s resume.

GADawg. My son is a casualty of well qualified kids turning down the FF from his school for Ivys and others in prior years. Contact me privately and I will give you the details. I cannot do it in a public forum that will betray confidences. I think there is a way to do that through CC. I can say that my son’s school will think long and hard about sending cum laude candidates to apply to the program in future years.

ps. “I hope this information is beneficial”…right TJ?

The FF Facebook page is posting some great congratulation messages for the new UGA president. Definitely worth a peep…

These students get more awesome by the year.
