Founders Award

I was looking into this award, and I just had a few questions. Anyone have any idea what the average stats are to qualify for this scholarship? Would an A average and 1250 SAT cut it? Thanks

I don't think so, I heard you need to have solid extra cirriculars and normally above a 1300 as well as a very strong course load. Someone who doesn't take mostly ibs/aps but has an A avg in regular classes wouldn't be a strong candidate for it.

I don't know how much Tulane takes into account EC's into anything. Standards were possibly lower this year ( a 1300/ 3.6ish would've definitely gotten it for you this year, but I have no idea about next year-----there are no cut offs for Tulane scholarships---it really is completely dependent on who else is applying----if you are in the top 25% of their applicant pool you are going to get something-----TULANE'S UNBELIEVEBLY GENEROUS WITH THEIR SCHOLARSHIPS EVERY YEAR---PROBABLY THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY discounting schools that pay your way through like Olin, Berea, Service academies----when it comes to merit aid THEY REALLY PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH---unlike virtually all other schools

they give everyone a decent shot at merit $$$----they don't hoard their merit buck like other schools---seriously apply- they will blow your socks off i can't empahsize that enough

yea, i'm definitley going to apply next year, hopefully raise my SAT's

When my S got the DSA (the next higher award from the Founders), his SATs were lower than what "everyone" said was the "cutoff." So, I agree there is no cutoff. He was 1320 (M710). GPA 122w/94uw. Normal ECs, I would say. So, I agree, it's not a cut-and-dried formula.

BTW, if you don't know, when you apply to Tulane, consideration for the Founders and DSA is automatic. Only the DHS requires a separate application.

top 10% is DSA and the next 10% is founders... so its actually top 20% overall

and while there are no set cutoffs, my admission counselor said that typically founders was 1350+ and top 10% of hs class/dsa was 1450 top 5%... hopefully that gives u a decent idea of what your looking at in terms of your chances

I'm attending this yr. w/ the DHS. My SAT composite was a 2200, and at the time of my application, i was in the top 2% of my class. I'd totally encourage anyone to fill out the DHS application. The box project didn't have to be that complicated - mines was a set of fun facts with a description on the bottom. I got a phone call! It was aweomse! Tulane really IS generous when it comes to scholarships.

well i think tulane gave away more than the top 20% scholarships this year, due to extra funds due to katrina that expanded the availability of scholarships ($10 million from Qatar and increased alumni giving)

well then i guess the assistant dean of admissions must be wrong

im jus repeating the information i got from him but i guess you must have some inside scoop

i think he was repeating the statistics from a normal year---they sound more impressive/ elite (31 and top 10% for founders blah blah)----the fact that there was more scholarship money this year is irrefutable---the fact that qatar donated $10 million dollars for scholarships to tulane was in the news----although that money was for hurricane victims and was not exclusively for freshmen--so that might not have affected the top 20% thing---that the alumni donated this more and hence there is more funds for merit scholarships to attract students is my own speculation, but at the same time good common sense----if the top 20% thing is true for this year (which i doubt since it takes the school awhile to compile statistics for this year) then Tulane's standards have slipped a lot since i wouldn't be nearly in the top 20% in a normal year-------regardless i think it's better that we as the school's representatives make merit scholarships sound reachable---there's no need to have a tone that makes them seem like they are only for the elect few---i never figured out why schools do that

i think the extra money consituted that 2 k increase on the Founders that we got earlier... i agree that theres no need to place an elitist edge on merit scholarships, but at the same time it is still intended to denote a special academic achievement (not to say everyone isnt "special" in one way or another)... i think the speculation about admission counselors exagerrating information is kind of irrational, unless again you have "inside" information..

to imply that merit scholarships are out there for everyone is misleading... however tulane is known to be very good about doing their best to make the school affordable for anyone whod like to attend (through need-based aid)

dipset remember that one debacle we had on the GW forum?---haha

lol were we arguing or in agreement? all i remember is some1 making the claim that georgetown was comparably as "jewish" as GW (which is ridiculous-gtown is a ****ing jesuit school lol) so anyways, you get your tulane email/facebook yet?

on the original topic of this forum...

I think that if you have a good essay and good ec's, and a high gpa (like top 8% or so) you could get a founder's with a 1250 SAT. I only sent in my SAT's (1420) and hs transcript (59/725) with no essay or supplements and got one; I think lately, though, as a push for the more 'small liberal arts' school, they are focusing more on essays and ec's over pure stats. I certainly wouldn't aim for a 1250, aim for a 1400 and get as much money as you can, and do all the rest of the app. You'll regret it if you don't (me).
