I was very pleasantly surprised at the terms of the Founder's Scholarship that my son received from Denison. It requires a 3.0 to maintain it, but the student is only required to have that GPA at the end of his sophomore and junior years. This is great for a freshman who may have problems adjusting to the demands of college and whose GPA might not be so great in his first year.

What really made this scholarship offer outstanding, though, was that even if the student's GPA falls below 3.0 in sophomore or junior year, the amount of the award would drop from $15K to $11K, but he wouldn't lose the scholarship entirely.

Kudos to Denison for a very generous policy!

patsmom, That is fabulous. We really ruled out some schools where our son probably would not have qualified for financial aid, b/c of the risk of losing a merit award at the end of freshman year. It did happen to the D of a close friends of ours. They are now paying full sticker price at a very expensive private school, and it is a hardship for them. BTW, their D has a chronic health condition that played a role in her going below a 3.0 and the school's tutoring was not enough to rectify the problem.

Denison is at least helping to make it possible for a student who is making academic progress to stay and finish.
