I’ve taken only one AP class in freshman year (which is AP Human Geography) and was wondering if taking these four AP classes together might be too much? I’ve heard from the juniors in my school that taking AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics together was really hard so I’m debating whether or not I should take them.
AP Calculus AB (took Pre-Calculus as a freshman)
AP Statistics (considering AP Art History or Psychology 1 if not)
AP European History (for those in the IB program)
AP Microeconomics/Macroeconomics
Pre-IB Chemistry 1
Pre-IB English 2
Pre-IB French 2
just do as many as you can
Calc = intuitive
Stats = intuitive
Econ = mostly intuitive
If you’re not going to major in math or math isn’t an interest of yours, you shouldn’t double up on math classes. There’s always junior or senior year to take AP Stats. I think you should substitute it for a class that fits your interests. Everything else is good.
That’s way too many. Keep in mind that, being in the IB program, you will not be expected to have ANY AP except perhaps AP HG. Even for students who only take APs, 6-8 AP s (total)is what top colleges are looking for provided they are judiciously chosen.
For a sophomore, AP calculus and AP European history would be PLENTY considering you’re taking three preIB classes.
In addition, what’s your plan for the math sequence, does your high school offer MV or dual enrollment?
@pinklinks Thanks for the advice. I don’t really plan on majoring in math, but since I want my math credits for college out of the way (if they’re accepted) I have to double on my math classes either this year or junior or senior year. My Pre-Calc teacher said it was a requirement to take at least ONE IB math class throughout my high school years, so it’s the main reason why I have to double on it for one year. I just don’t know when.
@MYOS1634 My school doesn’t allow IB students to take dual enrollment at the same time. As for my math plan, I was planning to take AP Calculus AB and AP Stats this year then take AP Calculus BC the next year then take IB HL (or SL) Math senior year.
OK thats a good plan for Math, except you really don’t need to take AP stats - first because as a high school class it’s designed for students who won’t or can’t take calculus and second because you’ll have to take it in college (it’s part of the “relevant coursework” rubric on your resume and needless to say employers don’t care what you did in high school + often there are specific classes depending on major such as stats for business, for social science, or biostatistics).
@MYOS1634 So even if I pass AP Statistics in high school, I still have to take it again in college?
Basically, yes. Not all colleges grant credit for it but even if yours does it’s really in your best interest to retake it in college, especially if you go for any social science including economics, or premed, or biology, or business (because AP stats really doesn’t cover what these majors want in terms of stats.)
Your schedule is not balanced in subjects of study.
Taking 2 math classes at the same time is too much. AP Stats does not strengthen your math foundation.
Probably you should look into physics, biology, arts, and computer science and take at most 3 APs.
@MYOS1634 Thanks for the heads up, I’ll DEFINITELY reconsider taking AP Statistics now.
