Four Days 'Til Move In...Questions and Tips?

Hey guys :) I'm an incoming Gallatin transfer, moving into Second Street on the 30th. I'm sure there are a lot of other people on this forum in the same position. I'd love to hear everyone's last minute tips for adjusting to the dorms, and to life at NYU, and hear from some current students about what their first week or two was like :)

And if anyone has specific about Second Street, I'd love to hear it, because I haven't really found much other than that you can't underestimate the lack of space.

Bump Bump

I would also love to hear about any move in tips. What does move in day look like? I heard they close off the streets? We will be moving my son into Hayden.

Also, are there any dorm room “must haves” unique to NYU. Any advise on metro cards?

metro cards- you will need them. Don’t go for the monthly.
must haves- bed risers (allow for extra storage under the bead [ie a place to put your luggage])

don’t double park because NYPD WILL be out and ticketing people that try to double park. it’s a Sunday in NY which means meters are free.

coooooooooome to the Kimmel Center on Sunday morning for free NYU info and free stuff for students and parents.

either get here early or late, because there’ll probably be long waits for moving carts.

What’s the advantage to moving in on Sunday? Why not just avoid the lines and move in on Monday?

There’s some stuff going out in the evening that you’d miss out on. Also, your roommates would be there already so you’d get last pick (if that means anything to you). I know for Stern we have orientation stuff immediately on Monday so moving in that day would make no sense.

Presidential Welcome at Madison Square Garden is on Monday and it is REQUIRED for all freshmen, as well as new transfer students and commuters.

Also, the first night Welcome Week activity is going to be crazy.

I’m working a few of the night time events, INCLUDING Rocky Horror Picture Show, which will be an absolute madhouse, I’m certain.

What’s this Madison Square Garden event you speak of? Are you sure it’s required for transfer students? And what exactly do you mean by required?

i don’t know if it’s so much ~required~ as strongly recommended (at least, that’s what they told us in training) but it’s where:

a guest speaker (always an alumnus of NYU) comes to speak
President John Sexton speaks
the students watch the NYU: Reality Show performance

there’s a transfer student welcome on Monday in the Kimmel Center for University Life. it should be in your information packet. if you’ve registered for welcome week, it’s on the schedule.

freshmen in residence will be led there by their RAs. commuters and transfers go to their respective welcoming ceremonies in Kimmel first. I THINK. i’m not sure. i’m not working the MSG welcome.

it’s Monday afternoon. on Monday morning, there’s a few events, but Monday night is the true start of Welcome Week with the THINKfast game show as the main event.

If we decide to come early, what time do you think is good? 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Well move-in times are from 7-9, 9-11, 11-1, 1-3, etc. People sign up for one and come at that time (although if they don’t check, I guess you could come anytime in between, it’s just to create some order).

I know most of my suitemates will be doing 7-9am but my parents were pretty lazy (“we’re not getting up early!”) so I’m coming in around 9-11.

one of my roommates is coming in between 7-9am since he’s coming from PA, and the other one is coming at the same time as me (9-11) since we live close by.

chinablue, the early worm gets first dibs. We moved in early last year, despite the time we signed up for and daughter was able to pick her bed out first.

Good. I signed up for 3-5 PM because I RSVP’d the day before it ended, but I’m making an excuse to say that 3-5 is an inconvenient time and I’m actually getting there at 7 AM. Unlike ohgod’s parents, my mom freaked out and wanted me to be the first one there!

Lucky you. If I could I would be the first one there, too. It’d make it much easier to unload all my stuff without having to deal with meeting my roomies/hiding my parents from everyone. :D

Thanks :D. In a way I don’t think I’m lucky. I told my roommate via facebook that I was actually going to come during the 7-9 AM block to move in like he was. After that, he hasn’t responded to my facebook messages except to say he got our refrigerator. I sent him one last message saying I looked forward to meeting him but still no response.

Now I’m getting a little nervous and hope I don’t get the cold shoulder attitude, but oh well, I think I’m making a big deal out of nothing…LOL XD
