Four Options: UVA, Boston College, Wake Forest, Trinity U (TX)

HELP!!!

UVA, BC, WF, or Trinity University with a pretty good scholarship. what do you suggest??

UVA or WF. If you’re from VA, not sure how you could turn UVA down at the instate price

Nope, not a VA resident.

What are the student’s interests? What type of campus experience? Don’t know anything about Trinity but the other three are awesome. Typical peer applications. S attends Wake and loves it. He would love the other two mentioned too. He’s a business major (finance) and they are all great for that discipline.

Yes intended major and other interests. Service or more Greek life? Location preference. Boston or small towns? Texas or east coast? Small or mid size or larger flagship type student body preference if any?

Who beat who last year in ACC football ?

^ That was a solid game that Wake could have won. High octane and very entertaining. How about the Wake/ BC hoop game this yr? Another nail biter. Last second heroics from the Eagles. We’ll get you in Baseball this spring…

Regarding Trinity University . . .

With that list of acceptances I assume you have been offered significant merit money at Trinity University. They are very good with merit money. If money is an issue or grad/professional school is on the horizon, make sure to consider that benefit.

As you might expect from my screen name, I graduated from Trinity long ago in the dark ages (as well as UVA). In my opinion it is a great place to go to undergrad and has a lot to offer, including small class sizes, professors who love to teach, and great facilities. And there will be plenty of students there, like you, who chose Trinity over more selective options. Greek life is on the smaller side, in case that matters one way or the other to you.

It does suffer from lack of name recognition however, particularly outside of Texas, but if grad/professional school is likely then that isn’t as big of a concern.

My biggest concern I would have regarding choosing Trinity is its four year graduation rate (and I have thought about this in the context of my sons’ college options). According to some reports it is around 69% with about 1 in 5 students who started at Trinity finishing at another school. This bothers me. I do not know whether that is some statistical artifact with a “good story” or whether a good percentage of enrolled students decide, after attending for a while, that they made the wrong choice. In making your decision you may want to investigate the reasons behind that apparently somewhat low number.

Otherwise I think Trinity is a great place to go for undergraduate and offers a nice alternative to larger schools at, oftentimes, a significantly lower cost due to merit aid.

Good luck on your decision.

@rickle1 Lol. I knew you’d get it.

UVA

One thing to consider is if you are ok with the housing situation at UVA. Great school, but I believe after freshman yr everyone for the most part moves off campus. That is not the case at BC or Wake.

Can you list

  • your parents’ budget (without loans)
  • net cost* for each university
    *(tuition, fees, room, board) - (grants, scholarships) =

OP please feel free to ignore commentary from students who joined recently and who blurt out one school name.

Especially as they are on waitlists from other schools or potentially rejected from some of your schools or similar competitors.

It’s much more difficult to pick out one from four. I would eliminate two.

Say UVA and BC. Keep wake and trinity. Or whatever. This is what I am suggesting. Just the method.

It will make the choice clear and more compelling. It makes it easier.

Good luck and give us an update.

If you’re having trouble getting down to two (great idea), I suggest making a pro and con list and be very honest with yourself. You may even want to write a paragraph describing the reasons you want to attend each and concerns you might have about each. Really think about that. Getting to two shouldn’t be that hard. Then you make the choice based on whatever is most important to you (assuming it’s affordable).

Some points to consider are: What do I want my 4 yrs to be like? What type of outcomes do each generally represent for my area of interest? Where do I want to live after college? etc.

@rickle1 That’s a great idea too.

We used to call it making a “Ben Franklin”. Maybe that’s how he came to decisions. Good enough for the Declaration of Independence, good enough for me. Lol.

^ Ah… the good old “Ben Franklin”. I used to call it that too and it’s still my visual as it was beaten in to me during entry level sales training about 100 yrs ago. But you know what…it works because it makes you get real clear about things. Clarity is king in my world.
