For next fall, I'm going to be rooming with three other people in an apartment-style dorm--separate rooms sharing a bathroom, lounge, and kitchen. The problem is that there are three rooms--one single, another single, and a big room for two people. So how should we work it out? We supposed that we should switch second semester so that it's fair, but it's going to be kind of a hassle to move all our stuff all over again. Does anyone have suggestions or experience with this?

run into a single with all your stuff and say "dibs!"

honestly, I think that the switching sounds okay, and not very inconvenient. Or maybe y'all will find out that you like things the way they are.

sleep in the bathtub, duh.

switching is very inconvenient. whoever is in the double will get used to it and not want to move. If you live with the same people the next year, swithc then.. not in mid year.

well, it's not as if there are many options. i guess this is what you should do. when everybody gets there or over e-mail, just be like, "does anybody not care if they get the double? if nobody wants it we'll just switch after the first semester". and then hopefully two people will step up and say they don't care, and take the double. or, they'll say, let's switch, and either they end up not wanting to switch, or you have to switch. it's a 2/3 chance that there will be no problems. and if you end up having to switch, doesn't seem like a big deal. a little inconvenient maybe, but whatever, you all can handle it i think!

Switching's not so bad. That's what I did this year, and it worked out fine.

Just, whatever you do, don't go in and grab the singles without asking. You have to live with these people for a year. You don't want to antagonize them on the very first day.

maybe if your in a double you have less chores or something? or restoke the soda supply less often?

Run in a single and lick the door knob.
Mine.

LMAO, disgusting!

"Convert" part of the lounge into a room (using bookshelves and other high enough furniture to act as walls). I've seen it done. It's not a perfect solution, but it works (especially if the living room is huge).

draw lots. luck.

yeah, do some sort of lottery system... two short straws get the double.

I'd say switch around. I know it's not easy but it is definitely needed in order to insure that no one gets screwed over.

If someone who really wanted a single lost in the lottery, he/she may really be slightly ****ed off for the whole year.

only do the lottery if no one steps up for the double

Hold an auction. The winners pay the losers.

slorg...that sounds exactly like one of the examples in my econ class...

if one of you is an engineering major, you could just build another room or a loft for the other person to live in.
