four years in CC to transfer to UC?

so I have to ask if it's a good idea to stay at a CC for four years and then transfer to a UC in Fall 2012.

I say this because this is my third year at CC and i was hoping this semester was going to go well and transfer.However, I had to drop my calculus I class because of poor grades and did not want to risk my UC TAG and GPA.I am currently a chemistry major(not sure if ill change.depends how i do on my last general chemistry class).I have 3.01 GPA.I am done with IGETC and just working on my pre-requisites for the chemistry major.I still need several physics classes and start the calculus series.

you can take your time at your cc, there seriously is no rush. it doesnt matter how long you take. the only thing that really matters are the grades you got while you were there. if you dont like the schools you got into this year, you can stay a 4th year and raise your gpa/finish those pre reqs.

Chemistry majors have to complete Calculus I, II and III plus a semester of differential equations. If you have been at a CCC three years and not been able to complete even the first semester of Calculus due to poor grades in the subject, you may want to seriously reconsider whether or not Chemistry is a realistic choice of a major for you.

Physics requires calculus and p-chem requires physics/math. You have a long ways to go but don’t let that get you down though. If you want it badly enough then you should keep at it no matter how long or hard it is.

@redoplease:time doesnt really matter to me but i think im the only one who is going to be at a cc for four years.either way,i will apply.let see what happens.

@Lamaitre1:this was my first time taking calculus and about 75% of the students taking the course also drop so i know i am not the only one going through this dilema.i will just take it again.but i will consider if chemistry is my major.

@iTransfer:thanks for the support.pretty much the only reason ive been at a cc for so long was that I was completing IGETC and didnt know what was my major till this spring.

^Bollocks, I’m in my 4th year, I tried to get down to SBCC and couldn’t afford the rent so I ended up getting my Pell tied up down there for 2 years (the second year I took mixed online there and in person at another college) and I’ve spent the 2 years since trying to make myself presentable/complete as many Psych/IGETC courses as I could. You’re not the only one with a class list 5 yards long lol. Relax, be happy, you’ll be fine. My mom worked with a guy at Safeway who had to stay for FIVE years.

Itachirumon, how did you like SBCC’s pipeline? Also, I may be getting a job at UCSB so plan on getting my own apartment either downtown SB or IV and considering offering discount rent to a student. I’m sick of stale sillycon valley again so if everything goes as planned I am heading to SB right after Christmas.

@ray7862: I spent 6 years at a CC (started sophomore year of HS) so don’t worry, you’ll never top that :P

@Grimes99 Why so long? lol I’ve only been at CC since September 2009 but I’m 23; and people always assume I’ve been going there for ages. I hate having to tell people I didn’t officially go to college till I was 22.

@HeatherBecca: Lonnnng story. First was me being a lazy ass. I took college (and school in general) for granted. My mom and grandpa went to Berkeley, and my grandpa went to Berkeley law afterward. My grandma, uncle and cousin all went to UCLA. My other cousin went to Stanford, placed in the 99th percentile on the MCATs and then attended UCSD medical school on scholarship. Basically, I figured college was a given rather than something I had to work at since it was talked about as a for-sure thing in my family rather than something that’s tough and requires effort.

So I moped through high school with a ~3.85 (which, considering my high school didn’t have APs so the highest GPA you could get was a 4.0 isn’t too bad, but I put in almost no effort.) knowing I was attending a CC anyway. Never took the SAT or ACT. Started at CC my sophomore year because my mom said I had too much free time on my hands. Again, I was way immature when it came to school, and I was taking tough computer science coding classes. Did the bare minimum, barely passed the classes… and so began a lonnnnng run of Cs that screwed my GPA.

Eventually, I figured out that working retail is not cool and focused on school. Got my GPA back up above a 3.0, had the TAG program in my sights and then got royally screwed over by a counselor at my CC (that’s another story in and of itself) which required me to stay another year at CC. I’m now technically a UCI student, but I’m dropping out after this year so that I can go back to my CC for the spring and then enroll at UCSD in the fall on TAG.

So yeah, I’m 23 as of last month and hoping to get done at UCSD by next summer (using both summer to complete coursework.)

And now you know the rest of the story :)

Oh, and forgot to mention that about 4 years ago just as I was getting my act together I had some pretty severe family issues. They were pretty bad by any definition, and I ended up missing so many classes that I failed two courses (only classes I’ve ever failed at CC, but this was a pretty unique and bad situation.) I salvaged the one poli sci class I was taking and got an A, but ended up having to repeat the other two. So yeah, 80% my being lazy and then from '07 to now it’s been me recovering from having enormous changes in my life pretty much overnight.

@Grimes99:wow!well thanks for the story.i thought i was a dummy in community college because im taking too long to transfer.but now I have my hopes up.good luck on getting admitted to UCSD.

by the way,why are you droping from UCI?

@ray: Haha no problem. Trust me, if I’m across someone who ever beats my record of consecutively full-time enrolled semesters at CC, I’ll be genuinely impressed. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of ~130 units and literally 5 Associate’s degrees.

Why am I leaving UCI? I’ll try and make this as simple as possible. Even though I was lazy as a kid, I had been dead set on going to UCSD. Three years ago I was put on a plan by a CC counselor that had me taking my final math class last fall. Problem was, I needed to have it done by last spring in order to be TAG-eligible. I was not told this, and the plan he outlined had me taking it in the fall, so that screwed me. My TAG was invalidate as a result (even though I got an A in the class) and I was not admitted to UCSD since I only had a 3.03 GPA. The cutoff for non-TAG was a 3.2.

I had applied to UCI, UCR, UCSD and UCB/UCLA (the latter two just so that my family can’t say I never tried; I knew I wasn’t getting in) and had never been to a campus other than UCSD. I went to Berkeley once, but just for fun, and knew I wasn’t going to get in there. Anyway, I got into UCI but still had no intention of going there. After spending many days driving down to UCSD and talking to counselors about what I could do, I got put on this plan (which, I confirmed with the head of admissions.)

1) Go to UCI for a quarter
2) Earn less than 30 quarter units
3) Apply to UCSD as a TAG applicant from my CC
4) Withdraw from UCI after the fall quarter
5) Re-enroll back to my CC and take one unit
6) Be admitted under UCSD TAG for fall 2011.

Confusing? Extremely. But hey, as long as it works. I just have no interest in UCI at all. UCSD is what I’ve always been set on doing, and at this point I’ve overcome too much to let that slip by.

Way to go Grimes :slight_smile: Lol. Damn.

I’ve been at my CC almost 4 years now. Prior to that, I was at another college for a semester and a summer when I was in high school. (I graduated at 18, but took the entire HS curriculum in 2.5 years through home school).

The problem with the home school program was it left me short on math classes, and to be an engineer you need a lot of those. When I realized that I needed intermediate algebra, trig, precalc, calc 1, calc 2, calc 3, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete math to transfer to a UC, I freaked out.

From there the path wasn’t perfect - I made the dumb mistake of trying to take Calc 1 online - that was a bad idea. I then took it with THE hardest teacher on campus, again a stupid idea. XD

Calc 2 was pretty easy in retrospect, calc 3 is a bit of a pain - but taking it with Physics made it so much more fun.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about it - you’ll probably have to deal with a financial aid headache near the end (hurray for maximum time frames), but depending on your major and situation you’ll probably be fine. For some majors, it’s expected lol.

At least you’re doing it at a nice cheap community college, instead of a very expensive UC!

@Grimes99:sir,I applaud you.

@wwlink:keep going!you got nothing to lose at a CC.plus,you have a shot at one most prestigious university-system in the world, which are the UCs.

@wwlink: I took discrete math just for “fun” last semester. That lasted for about two weeks. I’ve never been so overwhelmed by a math class, and I’m pretty good with math.

@ray: Thanks! :)

@ray: Haha no problem. Trust me, if I’m across someone who ever beats my record of consecutively full-time enrolled semesters at CC, I’ll be genuinely impressed.

I got you beat Grimes with 10 years of full time CCC enrollment, last 5 straight with summer courses. I earned one certificate then in 03 budget crisis the degree program i was in crashed when i only had 1 more class left. I was forced to switch schools but instead of a degree could only earn a certificate and had to change majors. Then that school was going through a budget crisis and would take 4 years to get the classes i needed. I then attended SMC’s Environmental and Urban Studies program. In 06, the major was defunded because the state couldn’t decide on a proper Bio class, realize this was before the class ‘Environmental Biology’ was created and accepted. SMC just brought the program back last year with the option of Env. Studies or Env. Science. In the meantime I went back to my 3rd CCC to take the classes I needed. I ran into the problem again that I would have to wait 2-4 years to finish up like 2 classes to earn that AS or AS equivalent certificate. I then went back to my 2nd CCC and completed all but 2 classes for a AA degree now running into a similar problem and may have to wait 2 years. So I have a choice now, go back to SMC and complete my Env Science degree or work at UCSB and take classes I want at SBCC. So all in all I have 300+ units @ 3.7 GPA, no C’s leading to an AA, an AS, and 4 degree equivalent certificates. My average monthly salary ends up anywhere from 3,300 to double that when working for someone else, triple when working for myself.

o m g.

You should get a nobel prize for your persistence.

@kmazza AHAHAH. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUQQQQQQQQQQQQQ .

dude, upload your transcripts!!! PLEASE!!
you probably took every available class, twice.

thx mate, I’ve been commended for that by numerous professors in the programs I’ve been in as well as counselors and administrators on the CCC, CSU, and UC level who have seen my transcript, for my unrelenting persistence and that nothing has deterred me to give up.
