Spend 4years in CCs?

Hi, this is my second year in CA community college. My intended major is civil eng.
Since the first CC I went does not open 5 units class in summer or winter
and I did not do well in the math placement test, I spend a year and a half in CC
to finish those Algebra,Geometry,Pre-Cal,trig. classes.
In this spring, I transfer to Santa Monica college which has 5 units class in summer and winter. But I look at my schedule, if I want to finish all my lower-division classes in 3 years,
I have to take Cal2,phy1,esl21b in summer, although I believe I can handle it, I dont even know if I have the priority to do that because this summer is just my second semester in SMC.

So now Im thinking to change my schedule and spend one year more in CC. Does it hurt my chance to get into UCs or good private school like USC if I spend 4 years in community college as an international student?
I asked counselor at school and she told me that it wont hurt my chance at all, because people know that engineering has a long list of classes to finish, but I just want to hear more informations from different aspects.
Thanks for helping.

It certainly didn’t hurt my chances at all. Grades are the major key to transferring, not length of time spent at a CC. It took me six (yes, six) years to get out of my CC. I had to begin back at Intermediate Algebra and work my way up through Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, as well as knock out my Chemistry, Physics, and lower division Engineering courses. During that time, I saved up like crazy so I wouldn’t have to take out loans when I transferred. I transferred into UC Davis with a transferrable GPA of 3.48.

I would not recommend taking Calculus and Physics over the summer, but you could knock out the ESL class. Understanding Calculus, and especially Physics, is what will make or break you in your upper division courses. So, do not try to rush through those courses.

Shouldn’t be an issue. A lot of people end up spending a long time in community college for whatever reason…not a big deal.
