To the parents of the class of 2011,

My family and I just got home from the 4th of July Fireworks at USNA and I wanted to let you know that your plebes seem to be doing very well. We sat in the stands on the PEP field and the plebes. I'm not exactly sure what time the first company arrived but it was fairly early in the evening. As each company got on the field, they lined up at attention and put their canteens down...pretty soon there were lines of canteens as the plebes headed to get their dinners.

The weather was pretty changeable and it did rain for a little bit, but didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits

The plebes had LOTS of time to just sit and visit with each other, one company even got a pick-up soccer game going. The cadre kept an eye on them, but didn't bother them. I would say they had a good hour to eat and visit before they were all brought to attention for the lowering of the colors and a short speech by the Regimental Ops Officer after which they were given carry-on again until the fireworks started.

The fireworks were really impressive, right over the water. The show lasted about 20 minutes or so and after it was over, the plebes headed back to Bancroft. We had to jump out of the way of a couple of very motivated companies as they ran through the parking lot to the Hall.

All in all, I think the plebes got a much need break in their routine, but they sounded great and looked great. There were a few walking wounded but that's to be expected!

Just thought you'd all like to know how your plebes spent their holiday!
