FPF really messing my plans up - intended cs major

My ideal plan would be to take Math 54 and CS61A during my first semester at Berkeley, but that will certainly be impossible due to the fact that I'm a spring admit and I can't take either of those classes at FPF.

Should I just use FPF to knock out 3 or 4 of my breadth courses and just start with 54 and 61A during my Spring semester? I don't really feel like taking 1B since people say it's a weeder course and I've actually covered most of the stuff with differential equations in our BC class this semester. Would the downtime in math (the whole summer and the whole fall semester) greatly affect me negatively? Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

I've read up about this concurrent enrollment stuff. It seems like from what I've read I'd have to take Math 54H, which might not be the best idea since I'm not a math major and I've heard it's pretty hard. I'm just rambling on now, so does anybody have any ideas for me?

Thanks!

(Background: I'm an intended CS Major in L&S accepted as a spring admit. I've been accepted into the FPF program, and I intend to go.)

Totally not true - you can still try to get into 54. It’s not impossible! And you may as well try H54 and see if it isn’t as bad as you think it is - completely depends on the prof and what he wants to cover. Like H53 this sem was easier than the regular class when it came to midterms, had no quizzes, but the problem sets were brutal yet doable with a group.

I ended up taking 1B again, but my prof was awesome so it ended up being a nice GPA boost. You won’t be behind if you start the 61 series next semester - heck, I’m starting the 61 series next sem! (I was FPF too though haha). And yes, knock out those breadth.

DO NOT DO FPF (especially as a CS major)!!! You do not want to blow half your breadth requirements all in one semester… LOLZ. Spread them throughout college. Breadth requirements are relaxing and interesting (especially because UC Berkeley has an expansive list of classes [unlike FPF] to choose from, some of which are notorious for spuking out easy A’s… thus, by probability, there will be SOMETHING in the list of BERKELEY breadth classes that interests you). Heck, you can take all the breadth classes Pass/Not Pass… LOLZ. Just go to community college to take math 54, EE 42, and R&C (which cannot be taken Pass/Not Pass). Get those hard, non-CS classes out of the way because I’m assuming you care about CS since you want to major in CS. You might not learn much from community college, but you will get good grades (at least better than what you would at Berkeley), and the aforementioned classes do not help you with being good at CS at all. Sure, R&C may help you with CS by making you better at reading about CS, but that’s a stretch… I’m assuming you you already know English… Also, if you buy into the claim that “math 54 and EE 42 will improve your quantitative reasoning skills, thereby making you better at CS”, then go major in physics and see where that takes you. Linear algebra and especially differential equations will not be used when you are a software engineer.

IF YOU DO DO FPF, PLEASE MESSAGE ME SO THAT I CAN CONVINCE YOU NOT TO!!!

I knew someone who petitioned to take math 54 as an FPF student and he was allowed to take it.

Hey aznk122, I messaged you, let me know if you didn’t get it. My R&C will get waived, so I won’t have to take that.

Community college would sound perfect if I could knock out Math 54 and EE42, but the two community colleges near me don’t offer an EE42 equivalent, only CS61B and Math 54 equivalents. I could just knock those two out, I guess.

Thanks for the help guys. Anybody else have any other opinions?

Yes, CC in the fall is a good choice if you can cover two prerequisites there. Make sure that it has a course covering all of CS 61B, since some have partial CS 61B courses that will require you to complete CS 61B by taking CS 47B (see [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) ).

If you attend FPF, you’d likely have to petition to be allowed into a main campus Math 54 or H54 course (probably on a space available basis after regular Berkeley students have registered), or take the equivalent course at Berkeley City College. CS 61A would likely be a similar situation (but is not offered at Berkeley City College).

However, you will not be delayed in graduation from L&S CS if you wait until spring to start the CS 61 series.

Apparently my CC has a prereq class to the 61B class, so it seems out of the question there. So I could only cover one of my major prereqs there (that being math 54)

My best situation would be to take ESPM50AC and philosophy 2 at FPF and take Math 54 and CS61A on campus. How do I go about petitioning for those classes on campus? I checked out the concurrent enrollment website, and it’s not very clear. When should I start trying to talk to professors?

I’d be fine with waiting a semester to take CS61A i guess, but I really want to knock out at least math 54 my first semester if I do get stuck at FPF. I could knock out just Math 54 at community college, but I really want the first semester dorm experience at Berkeley, so unless I could fulfill more prereqs at a CC than at FPF I think I’d choose FPF.
