France approves burqa ban

Ah, the laws in the middle east are Shariah laws, which were based off the Islamic faith.
Still cultural and religious.

Lets put it this way.

If you walked down the streets of a very muslim city under shariah law not being modest. You would probably be arrested/raped/ ect.

If you walked down a french street not being modest, no one cares.

The double standard that persists should allow france to do exactly as the backwards shari’ah law does. Until shari’ah law is no longer used, France should have to right to ban it.

@romani
You assumed it when your argument was based off of my (false) belief that I would not disagree to Christian and Jewish customs of the same vein as the burqa deal. I said I was on the fence when there was no thesis to my original post. I do not wish to debate this further.

^^That’s too stupid to even deserve a response.

^^what you’re doing is judging other people’s choices that are none of your business [or the French government’s].

A. Europe is pretty ****ed up, France included. This can’t possibly be the most unreasonably absurd law in France. Not top 10 either.

B. France should do what the French people want it to do. If French people hate rights and liberty and want to get rid of it, let them do what they want to do.

C. Screw France.

Did anyone even read my post? Yes, the French government went about this the wrong way and they are hiding their intolerance by saying that they are banning it because it opresses women. BUT, everyone on here is saying “it’s their choice to wear a burqa”. More often than not, it isn’t truly their choice because they are pressured by the close-minded society around them. They are pressured by the Islamic community, their husbands, the mosque etc. When Islam always preaches that women should be modest and that those who are not will go to hell, what do you think the women will wear? Of course they will be scared into wearing a burqa. I fear this happens with many Muslim women. In our journey to want to sound extremely tolerant of other cultures, let’s not forget that opression will always be… opression. Before I get called an Islam hater, I would like to say that I think most religions (to a certain extent) preach close minded and outdated ideas… thus, the following quote:

“All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit”

-Thomas Paine

The burqa is another way through which Islam tries to get women to conform and be submissive and powerless. It gives more power to the male portion of Islamic society.

By the way, I’m, in no way, a supporter of France but I think the more important discussion is whether a burqa has a place in our future society. I still think that women (as long as it’s truly a choice without any societal pressures) should be allowed to wear it because it’s their personal decision and they aren’t hurting anyone else. BUT, I just wish more women would make the decision of not wearing it.

Burqas are oppressive. I’m Muslim and I really don’t know any women who want to wear one. But then again, I really don’t get the point in banning a burqa. It’s not interfering with day to day life or anything.

We’re having 2 separate arguments here.

France has no right to infringe on a religious custom. It’s really just xenophobia.

The second argument is for a different day, a different thread.

^ Agree

So much for "Libert

“But what about the rights of Muslim women who honestly feel faith-bound to voluntarily don a burka? Or those prohibited by law from attending public school with the headscarves they wear everywhere else? Why is no one ranting about nuns’ habits being “degrading” (as Gerin called the burqa), just as no one lashed out at creeping extremism when then–First Lady Bernadette Chirac covered her head during Vatican visits?”

what’s with all the hatin’ on Fox News lol?

^because it often features incredibly biased, ratings-based reporting lol

Coming from a fellow muslima…I think that law is stupid. Women who wear the burqa in France are a small minority…so why can’t they leave them alone? I don’t see how it’s harming anybody? Wearing the burqa is simply a woman’s choice and it is a sign of her culture/faith. It is also a sign of modesty & respect for one’s body. They should be able to respect that right to wear it…and it’s stupid for them to think that wearing a burqa poses some sort of “terrorist threat”. Complete b.s.

“Burqas are oppressive”

That’s not really true. There are many muslim women that i personally know that wear the burqa voluntarily. Islam puts women on an equal scale as men.

Also, it’s kind of nice wearing an abaya (doenst have to be with a burqa) because men will lower their gaze and they won’t look at you, touch you talk to you, chat up with you whatever. [personally i’ve worn an abaya on multiple occasions…depending on where i am].

hey sabrina, what was your answer to my question: “hm i may be your guy?” It looks like the thread has been deleted.
