I am not an international student, but thanks for the information on my question. If you would say that Franklin and Marshall values one thing in transfer student selection above all else, what would it be? I am referring to things like GPA, Community Service, etc.

I would like to apply to F&M as an international as well and was wondering what chances I would have with a 29 ACT plus Writing (8), Sat II Math 700 and 730 Bio. TOEFL 113? I am German but went to a high school on the Fiji islands. Is my application going to be compared with others from Germany? Because we don´t have all the resources in Fiji schools as they have in Germany.

Hello, I am an International students currently doing my A Level and I will be applying early decision next year. What are the grades that are considered good for applying here? And does the college take more than one students from a country if all are vying for financial need?
Thanking in advance!!!

Keep in mind that F&M is a score optional school. So if you think your scores don’t represent your abilities and are not in F&M’s median range, you can always submit an additional essay instead of your scores.

Hi guys,
Hope the first days of the new year have been going well for you. I have been away for a few days without Internet connection, so I’m sorry if anyone had to wait too long. I hope my answers would still be helpful.

@chevyb:
I would say F&M does value the student’s academic achievements and personality, yet it would be too extreme to say the school values one specific aspect above all the others, since we evaluate each application thoroughly by considering every component possible.

@savusavu:
You might still be compared to other students from your country, but your unique academic background will be considered and can actually give you an advantage since you have a unique experience. As there are so many factors in one’s application, it is difficult to predict one’s chances based solely on standardized test scores. Also, sometimes we don’t admit the one with the best grades, but the one we find most suitable for F&M.

@shahikeshar:
It is nice to know you have such early interest in F&M. Since the applicant pool will be different between years and between countries, I can hardly predict which grades will be good or good enough for admission. Besides, grades is not the only factor that will be considered in your application. We do take more than one qualified student from a country even if they all need financial aid.

One important note regarding cats4u’s answer: F&M is a score optional school only for domestic students. International students are still required to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) unless you live in a country where taking the test is impossible.

Most of our information is stated clearly on the website, so make sure that you read and understand all necessary procedures. Because there is only one more week, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to let me know or email to intladmissions@fandm.edu to ask the admission officer.

Does F&M still have the Bioinformatics major? I’ m pretty interested in it. What’s unique about this major?

@Shirleyxxy: Bioinformatics is a new major and will be offered in the future. We have not had the major yet, and are still working on developing the curriculum. Most courses of this major will be offered by Biology, Computer Science, and Chemistry departments. You can find the most updated information about this major on this page [Bioinformatics ? Franklin & Marshall](Franklin & Marshall - Bioinformatics)

Thanks, ronile, but I originally thought F&M started to offer this major in 2008 according to their website.

In 2008 F&M was funded to develop this major, and the process is still ongoing. A few years ago we just started Computer Science major and now we are still trying to expand the CS department. As they are doing things step by step, hopefully Bioinformatics will be available in one or two years.

Hi,
Does the F&M supplement ‘What does being an Diplomat mean to you?’ essentially mean ‘What does it mean to you to be an F&M student?’ considering Diplomat is the name of the Athletics teams at F&M?
Do you have any other suggestions regarding the supplement, like the approach to this particular question?

Thank you.

@ithinkuknowme: it is true that “Diplomat” is used for F&M students. The essay can be treated as a “Why” essay, yet personally I think the topic can be even more open, since there are different ways to interpret and approach it. For example, you can write about what makes you interested in F&M, what you think an F&M student is like, what you imagine yourself doing at F&M if you get accepted, why going to F&M is so important to you, etc. Don’t limit yourself to the example I mention above; there are always more options. Another thing to keep in mind is that there is no absolutely right or wrong way of doing it. The main purpose of the supplemental essay is to see the student’s personality and ability to write clearly.

Thank you Ronile for the helpful advice and answers to our questions. You are a great help! :)

Hey ronile,

I was wondering if you knew the date admissions releases decisions for transfer students for the fall semester? Also, how long from that date do we have to accept the offer if accepted?

Thanks,
Chevyb

Hi chevyb,

I asked the officer whom I work for but she didn’t know much about the admission process for transfer students (I work in the International Admission Office). Since the deadline of May 1 is quite far away, it might take a while for them to work on first year applications. I think after you are accepted they will have further instructions on the deadline for you to make a decision. You can also try contacting the admission office for more information. Good luck!

Hi everyone,
If you are an international student applying to F&M, this information might be helpful. It is February already, but the International Admission Office is still offering Skype interviews this month. The interviewer will be one of the student workers at the office so the interview will be a lot more relaxing and informative. Skype interview is completely optional and will not affect your chance of admission, but it can help you show more interest and give you a chance to ask questions to someone with an F&M experience who has been through the same process as you are going through. This page (apply.fandm.edu/international-skype-interviews/) is where to sign up for it. We also understand that in many countries the Internet connection makes using Skype difficult, so we make the interview optional. If you have any questions, please feel free to email to intladmissions@fandm.edu for more help.

Hi ronile, do you know when the regular admission decisions will be released this year? Will the decision release date be the same for international students?

Hi Arthursbane,
I’m not sure about the exact date, but I think this year the date will not be much different from usual, which is somewhere before March 20th.

Hi ronile,

First of all, thanks for taking the time to create a thread and reply to the questions. Has been really helpful.

F&M appears to be a perfect fit for me in almost all the categories,but I am not really sure if I would feel comfortable with the social scene there.

I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs. Not interested in too many parties either. I am more of a sports+clubs+academics type of guy, who gets along with most people.

F&M has often been characterized as a ‘preppy’ school. Would I feel out of place there?

Hey hezekiel,
I am a high school senior girl who got in ED2 to F&M. I also don’t drink or anything and am kinda intimidated by the preppy stereotype. So if you do get in and choose to enroll, you will not be alone. Although I am also a little nervous for college which I assume is normal, I know people at the college now and they say that there are different groups of people and that you’ll probably find your niche because it’s diverse. There will be some preppy people who party but there will also be people that you and I will feel comfortable around. Although F&M wasn’t my top choice, (I applied ED1 elsewhere) I can already tell that I will be able to find my place. I hope this helps but I am also eager to hear what ronile has to say.
