Franklin Residential College?

Hey everyone! :) I was accepted to UGA on February 22nd for meeting the Early Decision criteria as an RD applicant, but I never got the chance to apply to the Honors college, simply because I wasn't aware it existed haha. So I applied for the housing I thought would be most similar to the honors dorms (Myers), Rutherford. Today, I got an email inviting me to apply to the Franklin Residential College, as apparently freshman entry into Rutherford is usually contingent upon being admitted to the FRC. I looked into it a good bit, but I'd really like some first-hand perspective before applying!

Does anyone have any experience with the FRC or anything involved with it? I guess my only reservations would be getting involved in a community that is TOO small.

Thanks guys. :)

I received the same email yesterday. I’m curious to know more about this as well. Can anyone explain how we were selected, or even someone with any knowledge of this?

My son, who’s a freshman in the Honors program, is going to be in the FRC next year. I was very eager to see him find a core group with whom to build long-term relationships, and I think the FRC could be a good choice. It’s a combination of a tight-knit community and social group, with the in-house support and advice of academic deans:

PM “somewhereinga” who frequently posts on the UGA board. Her daughter has lived in the FRC for a couple years, loves it, and has a leadership role in it.

Hey everyone, I am a Dean’s Assistant for the FRC and I would love to help answer any questions you have about it. First of all, the FRC will have around 130 members next year. Next year will be my third year with the group and I have made the most incredible friends and have had the opportunity to participate in many awesome FRC events. There are always different events going on, but beyond that the FRC connects you with incredible people that you get to live with. My first year I lived in a traditional dorm and did not like the experience, and found that living in Rutherford with the FRC offered so many incredible opportunities. Besides that Rutherford is located on the best part of campus! The deadline to apply is April 22nd, and here is a link to the application: http://frc.uga.edu/FRCApplicationFreshmen.pdf</a>. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email frc@uga.edu and I would be happy to talk with anyone more about the FRC!

Hi FRCgirl - How often do most students interact with the live-in Deans?

ugafrcgirl - I have a few questions.

Do most people live there all four years or join as sophomores or even later?

Do you think there will be very many freshman boys in the dorm?

I know Rutherford has social events. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Thanks

gadad: The students get to interact a fair amount with the residential dean. This year most of the FRC members are placed on the same floor as the dean to facilitate interaction. We hold our weekly cookie nights in the dean’s apartment with the dean. Our residential and senior dean come to most all of our events, and we frequently have Dean’s Tables with them at the dining halls. They also attend Performing Arts Series concerts with members, host Dean’s Teas, and attend attend many of the social and service events.

georgiaonmymind: It varies when people join the FRC. I personally joined as a sophomore, and some people join later, but a lot of people do join as freshman. Rutherford and the FRC have a very high return rate. Some people only stay a year or two, but I know many people who spend all of college living with the FRC. We have a certain percentage of girls and boys that are upperclassmen and a certain percentage that are freshman, so yes there will be freshman boys. We have a number of social events, our main ones being our semi-formal, end of the year banquet, fall break trip to Sapelo Island, Toma Field Day, and weekly cookie nights. We also have events celebrating holidays such as Halloween, winter holidays, and Easter. We have cook-outs, movie nights, games nights… the list goes on! We always take suggestions from the members about any type of event, and members can plan their own event for points. We have a point systems that rewards active participants by allowing them to have priority pick for their room the next year. This allows people to pick a single room, corner room, room on a specific floor, or whatever room you may want. Does this answer your question?

ugafrcgirl - just to confirm my logic, if there are 130 FRC members and rutherford houses 261, you dont have to be a member of FRC in order to live in rutherford, right?

Correct- Rutherford houses upperclassmen along with the FRC.
