Fraternities and Med Schools

Hi, I am a freshman at Hopkins, and I was wondering do medical schools "look down" upon Fraternity members or would they consider just as an extracurricular? Would it be worth placing on the application? I am debating the pros and cons of joining one, and I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

All other things being equal, I don't see how it could be a disadvantage.

if it's a national fraternity, there's the slim chance that the person who reads your application is a brother of yours, that could be a boost.

I'm also a premed in a frat at a top school (like Hopkins) and if you want to join you should go ahead and do it.

In my experience it won't hurt you unless you let the fraternity ruin your grades (which DOES happen if you party too much).

However, if you decide to switch out of premed and want a job, being in a frat is a giant boost (I've been getting consulting interviews and I've never taken a business course in my life). And besides, in my case, I found out last year that an active alumni is on the board of admissions at a decent med school....

Basically, join if you want to, but make sure you really like the guys and hazing isnt goign to ruin your frosh GPA.
