Im from Chicago and I'm curious to know about beta in particular. My brother is decent friends with an upperclassmen in beta. How much would that help? Would my gpa matter too much of a 3.3 and 26 act. Also do any fraternities give bids before formal rush?

Can anyone help me out here?

no one can help you out

Dude you’re worried about a particular house before you even step foot on campus haha. They’re really aren’t any “requirements”; every house will ask for high school GPA when you fill out a generic form at the Dunn Meadow rush event, but in the grand scheme of things a high school GPA isn’t going to get you in a house/not in a house–it’ll be about your personality and fit. Enjoy senior year and when you get to IU, check out as many houses as possible. You’ll be spending 4 years in a house, so make sure to do your due dilligence and find the house that’s the best fit. And if you have connections anywhere you should try to utilize those.

Then how would houses consistently have higher gpa’s than others?

Because naturally certain personalities that “fit” in certain fraternities will produce higher GPA students. They don’t have higher GPA’s because they select students based on GPA, they have higher GPAs because the personalities they select tend to have higher GPAs

Do they even make you hand in transcripts or do you just write it down on a form?

They do background checks and contact your high school counselor to verify everything you say…kidding man but stop worrying about small details so far in advance. And hkem, I would disagree with you. I mean it’s true certain houses have a lower GPA than most because they have a reputation for partying more than most, but there are high achieving students in those same houses who are in Kelley Honors, IBW, and Consulting Workshop. I fit in my house that’s not the highest GPA achieving house, even though I do very well in school. My personality fits in the house, but my personality doesn’t mean I get good/bad grades.

If you check out Beta you will see they have lowered there standards tremendously. They took a Spring pledge with a 3.1 GPA and another who reputedly sells illegal items. They have rejected potential pledges with friends in the house as well as those with great transcripts. It never takes long after recolonizing to back slide. Beta was a good house. You should visit them and meet there very average pledge class. Good luck with rushing unless you are a partying, hilarious, TFM type of guy. Only a small percentage of members actually do anything other than party.

IndUnJoe, you should stop trolling. All of the fraternities at Indiana are full of people who like a mix of activities. Some like to party, some like to study, some are into sports, etc. etc. Much like IU itself, the fraternities are diverse.

You just sound like someone who couldn’t get a bid
