Fraternities

Can any current students give me a run down of the fraternities at the College? Like who is top tier and what not, how they are perceived, etc. Also, I know they are building the new houses soon. Which fraternities are getting a house because I'm aware that there are more fraternities than houses being built, supposedly. Thanks.

Tough to say who the “Top Tier” Fraternities are. What are you looking for? Ranked by size, GPA, campus involvement, philanthropic involvement, parties…?

I’m guessing what you’re looking for is a popularity list of the fraternities but I feel that one, being in a fraternity would leave me biased, and two, it’s totally a subjective call. Every fraternity has something to offer and you should definitely rush any that seem to fit your personality. No matter which you choose though, I would highly recommend Greek Life.

Not sure if this’ll work, but hopefully below will be a link that shows the GPAs and sizes of the official fraternities on campus. Don’t assume that because one has a high GPA makes it any less fun than the others. Fraternities at William and Mary aren’t like most other schools.

In regards to the housing, I believe eleven houses are being built and there are somewhere along the lines of eighteen fraternities. Those that will get a house are those that are large enough to fill them and in good standing with the school. So basically any fraternity not on probation with over twenty brothers would be eligible. The houses should be open by the fall semester of the 2013 academic year.

This is the actual Greek report card.

I know you didn’t ask this, but I just wanted to add that greek life is not super exclusive at W&M like it is at some other schools. Greeks are friends with greeks outside of their fraternity/sorority and greeks and non greeks hang out together all the time. The frat parties are not limited to only greeks either.

I was not in a social fraternity, but I had tons of friends in a bunch of fraternities and sororities.

I agree that Greek Life isn’t super exclusive, and I agree that this is a good thing, but I would say that only a very small percentage of parties are open to those not in a fraternity/sorority. Mixers make up a good deal of the parties and you can’t really crash those. I suppose it’s different for girls, who can come as the date to pretty much anywhere, but for guys, if you aren’t in a fraternity, finding a good party for every night of the weekend is extremely difficult. However, keeping friends inside of/outside of Greek life is easy.

First of all, thanks for the responses! I guess I should clarify my original intent a bit better. Although Greek Life at W&M may differ slightly from other schools, I would venture to say that the majority of it is the same as the rest of the country. There’s always going to be “tiers” where students perceive certain fraternities as better than the rest. This ranking is usually based on things like social functions, dress, and conduct. So with that, I’m still wondering who most students at the College would consider “top tier”. How about the best 3-5 fraterrnities? Also, since originally posting this I came to discover that Sigma Chi, Kappa Sigma, and Beta Theta Pi are supposed to be 3 of the best on campus. Can anyone back up this claim?

I would approach Greek life carefully - do your research. Several of the frats you mentioned - also some sororities - are currently on probation for various (non-academic) reasons.

What are they on probation for? Any details? I did hear Kappa Sigma got in trouble over something and lost their units. Are they still getting a house in 2013?

You should check with the Dean of Students about disciplinary actions for any fraternity/sorority. You want to be able to join a group with your eyes open, and knowing whether a group is in debt to the school (for damages) or if they are under probation (which restricts social activities) are valid questions to ask of the fraternity & the Dean.

Tribe 321: We don’t know who the cool kids are. I suggest you attend rush events and get to know the guys in the fraternities and decide which ones you are interested in joining. Let them know of your interest and hang out with them. Good luck!
