What are each of the fraternities at Davidson like? Is there a big push for greek life? How much does it cost to go Greek?

Many of the more social boys at Davidson join fraternities. The official number is somewhere around 40-50%, but that number includes all of the kids who live and breathe academics/live in sub-free halls, etc. Of the pool of guys who go out on the weekends, the percentage is higher. Still, you can have a good time without joining a fraternity. Plenty of well-adjusted guys choose not to and don’t have a problem having fun. Nonetheless, the social scene revolves around fraternities-- they host the parties and provide the beer.

Dues for fraternities are in the $1000 range every semester (that I know of), but financial aid can cover some of (or all of) that expense, depending on your package. Also, it’s not like it’s simply an additional $1500–the cost of dues supplants and replaces what you would be paying for a meal plan and for beer.

Hope this helps. Fraternities can be really cool, really nurturing, and a great time. Don’t let the stereotypes dissuade you.
