What’s the real deal with fraternity rush at Duke? I know “formal” rush is second semester but friends at other schools like Vandy say “informal” rush takes places before second semester and by the time rush actually starts a lot of guys will already have been cut a lot of places. How hard is it to get in to a mid level frat at Duke? There seem to be tons of disgruntled people who didn’t get in on other schools pages but can’t find much about Duke.
LOL do less.
Don’t worry about all this. It’s just superfluous nonsense.
@MBVLoveless
Ouch! Hope things are working out for you at Duke, but surprised by your reply because you asked a not dissimilar question about Greek life and and slg’s in this group just a year ago. Any more helpful advice than “do less”?
What MBVLoveless meant was that the Duke freshmen class every year comes to Duke way too optimistic and way over their heads on what they’re gonna accomplish over their freshman year. During O-week, you’ll hear these ridiculous plans from the freshmen like “Oh I’m gonna double major in BME and Econ, and do a minor in public policy,” or “I can totally manage 6 courses while rushing during my spring semester, right?” Again, hindsight is 20/20, and by spring semester a lot of the freshman actually realize how naiive they were, and they make fun of the newly entering class for having the same optimism they once had, hence the term, “LOL, do a lot less Duke 2020.” Again, it’s a cycle that repeats itself every year.
Check out out this vid, and I can safely say as a Duke freshman that 90% of the stuff is true: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23m1bqE5VmE
And no one likes an arrogant p-frosh btw.
@kbd2019 Honestly wasn’t trying to be arrogant was wondering what @MBVLoveless’ experience was. Duke is a great school and I’m happy I got in but no one from my school, and barely anyone from my state goes. Can’t afford to go down for BDD so it’s hard to find out about this stuff. Will watch the video. Thanks.
To give you a serious answer, formal recruitment is in January; however, people tend to know friends from high school or people they’ve met at parties or in class and gain an advantage in the rush process. Greek groups more or less know that they are going to take a few people before rush starts based on their encounters with them.
Yeah I guess I’ve changed a lot as a person since this time last year. I did rush a fraternity and was pledging one (“mid-tier”) before I decided that I despised the Greek system and preferred my SLG/independent friends as people. I don’t want to give away my anonymity, so message me if you want to hear details.
