So I’m nearing graduation and I was looking over my options. I’m primarily a public health guy, I double majored in public health and statistics at USF. Im currently involved in some very cool statistical/epidemiologic research and my professor offered me a TA position after I graduate.
The thing is I don’t know how I feel about getting my biostatistics degree from USF. I’d like to move on to a better school so I’d have a chance at getting my PhD from a top school (e.g. Harvard or UC Berkeley).
If I got a computer science degree from USF it would be free, it’d only take a year, it’d allow me to publish a few more papers before moving on, and it would actually teach me useful skills. Alot of my future research ambitions are in things like neural networks and statistical simulation.
I do question the quality of USFs computer science program, and whether it’d make me a better candidate for a biostat degree at a better school. Thoughts?
If you have an undergrad degree in statistics and want to get a PhD in biostatistics, why would you get an MS in computer science? I mean, if you are already going to be there, you already have the prerequisites, and it’s absolutely free to you - I guess why not. I suppose that some of the coursework might be useful for a focus in neural networks.
But it seems to me like the better bet would be to get an MPH or MS in biostatistics or epidemiology somewhere else.
How frequently is your professor placing his students in to top programs?
