Free Software for Bargain Savvy Bruins!

I was bored, so I figured I could list some free software that I have found to be particularly useful. Feel free to post any that you think is good.

FireFox
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I'm pretty sure it needs no introduction..

OpenOffice
http://www.openoffice.org/
Really good writing, presentation, etc program. It comes bundled with some other good programs that essentially replaces MS Word , powerpoint, excel, etc. It will save you a bundle of money.

The Gimp
http://www.gimp.org/
If you're really cheap and just want to mess around with a photoshop-like program, then download this. I have noticed that the colors seem to be a bit off.

Avast! Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Yay! Anti-virus! Best of all, it's free for home users. You just have to register to get (I think) 14 months of it. Then you can register again if you want to renew it (for free)

AVG Anti-Virus
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

AdAware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Antispyware program! With the free version, it only scans your computer for any suspicious stuff. Really nice. Picks up what your other programs may have overlooked.

ZoneAlarm Firewall
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
Good firewall program. Choose the free basic package with only the firewall.

Speed Fan
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
If you're worried about the temperature of your CPU or something, this will show you the temperature.

Notebook Hardware Control
http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm
Controls your laptop's hardware. Undervolting can extend battery life! Use with caution!

MIRC
http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Ever heard of IRC? Never knew what it was? It's basically a online chatting room..used a lot for downloading files. You can probably find a lot of translated anime/manga stuff. Just visit your favorite translation site to see if they have a IRC address.

K-lite Codec Pack
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
All the codecs you probably need.

Hate Real Player and Quicktime? Then this program is for you! It can play essentailly any movie file! :D

DivX
http://www.divx.com/

High Quality CD Ripper...you know, for storing and backing up your CD's in a computer. Nothing illegal :)

Ruckus
http://wapps.ruckus.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/ruckus.woa
Use Ruckus for safe legal music downloading. Orientation was good for more than just signing up for classes! :P

Good suggestions, but Microsoft Office is easily pirated. I have a copy of 2000, and a friend of mine has a copy of 2003 and 2007, pirated by an intern at Microsoft.

:P
I guess it would be more for people who don't have access to any pirated copies..and I can't exactly suggest that people go out looking for them..:D

http://www.pidgin.im/****

I prefer it over AIM.

Rather off topic but I don't know how to get the sound working in Pidgin on XP, happen to have a solution?

More to the topic the list here is a pretty nice list for Mac users.

I prefer VLC over MPC for playing video. It's a lot more efficient.

CCCP > K-Lite (http://www.cccp-project.net/)

Also, I hate VLC's interface so I use MPC.

Wow.. thanks a lot for all the free software! =)

Mmm, amen for CCCP and VLC. I second Pidgin, too.

A good audio-editing program is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
And a good video file to AVI converter is AlltoAVI (http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/)

so where can we get microsoft office for free? lol

$100 is sooo much money to a poor college student!

BitTorrent/Azureus... yadada?

For Microsoft Office, use Open Office(or pirate it).

DC++ is a need too.

For the UCLA hub, just ask someone down the hall, btw.

Or I can just ask mme-lin..:)
