how/when do you apply for it? yeah I've been filling out fasas for years I already know all that junk. I'm extremely poor and I need free housing and I would absolutely qualify.
and someone told me after you fill out your fasfa this year you have to send it to the colleges you applied to? do you do this thru the update in January?
one more thing EXACTLY when do I take out a loan thru the school after I figure out which one I want to go to? like what month? your responses are greatly appreciated I can't stop worrying about this!!

i dont think free housing comes with fafsa. just tuition

I already answered your question UC. Fill out the fasfa. When you get accepted you will get a financial award letter that will detail ALL THE MONEY they will give you to attend school.

This will be grants, scholarships, and loans to pay for everything.

Best thing you can do is fill out the fasfa as soon as possible to qualify for all money before it runs out or you miss a deadline. When you fill out the fasfa, in the school selection, there is a checkbox that asks if you plan to live on campus or off campus. Send it to all the schools you applied to.

After the fasfa is processed you will get what’s called an EFC report- estimated family contribution. This will tell you if the school expects you to come up with some money. If it is 0, then you wont be expected to and your entire education will be funded through grants, scholarships and loans. Then wait till you get accepted and get an official award letter. You wont know anything else until then.

Housing is part of the financial aid. What is left after tuition, basically you use for housing, books, and living expenses. So if a school costs 15k a semester for a year, tuition will be 30k. Plus if housing is 10k for a year, your total cost of attendance will be 40k. If your financial aid award is 35k in grants and scholarships, then you would need to take out a loan of at least 5k to take care of the rest. Make sense?
