Free Tuition for UC almost finalized!

I would be ****ed off. But I wouldn't write the program off out of resentment. I would take a more objective standpoint.

ok wait... so if im 24, my efc on fafsa is 0, i make 20K per year part time for the past 2 years, i have been filing my own taxes since 18, i am considered independent due to I am 24 according to FAFSA, I dont talk to my parents really(its a shame) they have not given me a dollar since i was 18, am i eligible for this program? I think my parenta make about 100k a year but they dont pay jack for me....

anybody know?

yes you are independent no one cares what your parents make

Vyruz, your efc was 0 and you made 20k??
I made 11k and my efc was 1500!

wellll,

i said it wasn't fair because there's people whose parents make a lot of money, but they have a lot to pay for.... you know? like for me, my stepfather makes a lot of money,(a dentist) but my step sister is in grad school at USC for 90k a year! my other sister is at USC for undergrad for like what40k? hopefully, i'll be transferring to either USC or a UC next year too. . . and thats more money. And i still have 3 other siblings at home. The youngest one having a little of reading problem so he has a private tutor come in everyday to teach him.. while at the same time, my parents have to pay mortgages for like 4 houses cuhs we pretty much all live in differnet households anddd pay for our cars, insurance, etc. AND instead of getting tax returns, we have to pay an additional 100k each year! for me, i think i need aid because I can't possibly ask my stepfather pay for me.... but i can't. because. well, they just won't give it to me. that's why i said it was unfair. but honestly, i think its a good thing that the UCs are helping out those in need.

but i do agree they should lower the 60k... cuhs if they lower it to like 30k or 40k like you guys said, it means that those who TRULY need the aid, will get the aid. whereas, people with less than 60k probably dont need the aid as muchhh.

oh and i know so many people who HAVE like mass money but didn't pay a dime for school because their parents income were from like china or something and didn't report their taxes. so fafsa pretty much considered them to have 0 income. . . pretty much got a full ride to NYU and USC and LA and stuff like taht.

but i guess thats not really the pt. lol

how old are you nixie?

nixie, if you're under 24 years old your efc will be computed based on you and your parents' income, not just yours.

i think that it is ridiculous. my parents make $150K a year but i have to pay for college all on my own and i'll get didly for my financial aid. SUCKS!!!

yeah, that happens to so many people. It's pretty stupid. I don't understand what's so difficult about acknowledging an independent person that is under 24 years old.

well i understand the government's problem/worry. all people would claim independence to get free college.

Vyruz and Grey, I am 23 and will be 24 in Oct. You had to be turning 24 by the end of the year to be considered an independent, which I filed my fafsa as.

It's not difficult at all. The government does for a reason; they want to encourage (practically force some) people to enlist in the military after high school, and wait til they're 24 to go to college.

How cynical yet valid.

haha true...

Does anybody know if the complete financial aid package under the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan has loans included or is it just grants and scholarships only?

Thanks.

As they say in the adult film industry Good Gravy! That is awesome. I am so glad my rents own a business and there are so many tax loop holes :) $29,000 a year on paper!!! Thank god law makers allow these insane tax laws for reasons such as this... usually because they are so crooked they want to benfit from this stuff as well.

I'm not so sure free tuition is a good idea. My biggest concern is where will the money come from? The state and the feds are in the tank economically. It's not, IMO, fiscally responsible for either of those two take on the financial burden of the UC system.

Fiscal responsibility seems to be something that is missing from todays world, and that is not a good thing.

the students that are not benefiting from the tuition will be paying for it, or so that's what i make out of it

Regardless, it is an irresponsible financial decision.
