How does this work exactly at UCLA? After the student has requested tutoring, how does the student find out if the student got a tutor assigned or not?

Well, first week, during classes, they announce Covel and AAP tutoring. You need to personally show up at Covel Commons and sign up for Covel tutoring. About a week later, the instructor e-mails you with the time and room number.
I don't know much about AAP tutoring...If you are an AAP student, I guess you have guaranteed tutoring, you just need to sign up.

If one is not in AAP, and one signs up for Covel tutoring, one is not guaranteed tutoring? Anyone know who is given tutoring and who is not?

i signed up for covel tutoring for math and chem but didn't receive either of them... i signed up on the second day at noon (so one of the first people on the second day). i emailed them and they said that they're very sorry but the particular classes i signed up for were all full by the first day. so it really does depend on the times you sign up, how many people signed up for the classes you want, and what they have available...

i had tutoring for math last quarter though. in my opinion, it wasn't that helpful for me because my tutor really dumbed it down... but it's beneficial to some more than others

i'll just have to tough it up this quarter and try again next haha

is aap tutoring still being offered?

yes signups until week 3 but you need to be AAP student

Yeah, I went to sign up on the first day at noon when they had announced it, and the line was soooo long. I was worried I wouldn't get a spot, but in the end it turned out fine.
So yeah, if it's hard to get it on the first day, then it must be nearly impossible to get it on the second day.

I don't really see a point in having a line anyway. Last quarter I signed up for 32A on the third day, and I got my first time preference. It just varies on the session you want and the compatibility. Some tutors go off of certain professors' lectures. Also, some classes are more popular than others.

the man, the legend

Hey I was wondering, I read some comments on bruinwalk and they said the best way to pass chem 20a honors is to get in the tutoring system and study the test banks. Is Covel aap tutoring what they are refering to?

I believe you can get access to past tests even if you aren’t in tutoring through SRC. As a freshmen, you probably won’t have any test/quiz to turn in to get access to the test bank, but you can always make friends with someone older or turn in one of your earliest quizzes/exams you get back.
