Freedom of Speech in School

Today I was walking aroudn the halls and I saw several signs posted up that said "911 was FAKE!" "George Bush is a murderer" "DOn't believe his lies" etc. I tore all of them down and then walked into the cafeteria where I saw more. Now when I tore them down, appaerntly the punk kids who put them up saw me and said hey, you can't tear those down! I said sure I can, it's against school rules to post up anything on the walls without permission from the administration first, and it's my free speech. Then they responded something like it's not free speech. I just smiled and tore them all up and put them in the trash can right in front of them and walked away. About 5 minutes later they came over to where I was sitting, put one on my back, and then put one on the wall, I tore both down and didn't say anything. Then 5 minues later they came back again, one slammed one in my face from behind and said "eat that ****! don't you ever tear my friends' signs down again or I'll kick your ass" and I just took it, tore it in half and said "hey, john mccain is gonna win in 08." Then I told a teacher that I know pretty well, and they saw me doing it and stopped. I found some more in the hall after and will continue to search them out and tear them down. I am conservative, yes, and I do like George Bush, yes, and I believe they should be able to think what they want. Just when they start breaking school rules, and spreading hurtful propoganda that completely disrespects the 3,000 people who did die on 911 and their families... is where I get upset. There's a time and a place for political debates as well, I'd be happy to debate them in a proper setting, but they tried to physically intimidate me. Any ideas on what to do? Maybe wear my bush 2004 shirt tomorrow and stand right in front of them?

No no... just do what you were doing, tearing down the signs. The first rule in debate is to respect your opponent. You can't be against Bush, you can only be against his policies. It appears they don't understand this.

PS: I am moderately liberal.

my my, you torn down their signs and shredded them in their faces and you claim they tried to intimidate you

Are you for the war, well, its time to enlist...and I get yelled at for saying that, but if you support Bush, you support this war and you will go over there as soon as you can

i am so tired of people who talk the talk, but won't back it up with action

chickenhawks are pathetic

if you are signing up, be safe, if not, don't talk about 9-11 (which by the way, well we all know the truth, and over 25000 innocent Iraqis have been killed, most by the US, but guess their lives don't matter to you)

If you are gonna talk about free speech, fine

If you are gonna support this President, fine

But be honest, you ready to go to Iraq TOMORROW?

amen citygirlsmom

I swear, one more freedom of speech debate, and I'm gonna die. We had 3 today in school in 3/4 of my classes.

Okay lol I wasn't trying to turn this into a political argument, but I guess the Bush-bashers can't refuse for one second. I tore the signs up after they were getting in my face. It is against school rules to post signs around the school.. no matter what it's for if it is not approved by the administration. And these signs were very offensive and propoganda. And actually a few minutes later after I made that post they came up to me in the hallway, got in my way and wouldn't move, so I had to walk around them all.

Atomiconfusion

I also hate it when people break school rules but if you were concerned about this shouldn't you have told a school administrator instead of taking matters into your own hands.

And if you know the proper time and place for a political debate than why would you tear down there signs instead of talking to them like rational human being.

I don't think John McCain would have torn down those signs.

Your actions really don't match your words.

I was taking them down without any real care until they put one on my back, put them up all around me, etc.

I did tell a school administrator as soon as I saw that they were putting up more. I never wanted to get them in trouble, I just wanted the signs down , but after they slammed one in my face and wouldn't stop I did tell a cafeteria monitor.

I told them that they were breaking scohol rules. I think that is talking to them like a human being...

What about the 30,000 Iraqis that have died since the war?

****ing idiot.

Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq, and consequently 30,000 died. Thus Bush is a mass-murderer. Directly or indirectly is not important, Bush had the power to spare those lives but he didnt.

What about the tens of thousands of Iraqis that have died as a result of Bush's war? He is responsible. He IS a murderer, and you SHOULDN'T believe his or his press secretary's lies about how well the war is going and how it's "Mission Accomplished". It's not hurtful propaganda, it's the truth(except for the part about 9/11 being fake). They have a right to tell the truth, no matter how disconcerting it is to you.

Any ideas on what to do?

Maybe apologize.

How is "9/11 is fake" not propaganda?

Just because they're "right" in pointing out that Bush has lied (and as it happened, supports your view of him), it means that everything they say also is right too?

Great train of thought there.

I feel bad that you had to experience the bullying...and i give u a lot of props for standing up for waht you believe in even tho its not waht I do...however, like some of the people above, I agree that it was not your place to tear down the signs...just because they are hung up "illigally" does not mean that you are automatically the hallway patrol monitor. The school would have taken care of it eventually i hope, and you would have been spared and emberessing day...

I feel like i'd fit in your school quite nicely...(im a progressive)

"it's against school rules to post up anything on the walls without permission from the administration first..."

That's true. Although I can understand why they put up the signs, they def. needed to have the schools permission in doing so. But was it in your authority to take them down?

"...spreading hurtful propoganda that completely disrespects the 3,000 people who did die on 911 and their families... is where I get upset."

Really? Your subjective view of what constitutes "hurtful propaganda" is something up for debate.

"...but they tried to physically intimidate me."

Youre right there. They had no right to physically intimidate you. Tell your principal or a teacher you trust about the incident. *******s like that make us Democrats just as ignorant as extremist conservatives.

"Maybe wear my bush 2004 shirt tomorrow and stand right in front of them?"

Go ahead. I wear my "Dont blame me, I voted for Kerry shirt" all the time in school. Nothing wrong with wearing political shirts.
