Hi! So i’ve been debating about taking spanish or french since next year my school doesn’t offer chinese anymore. I signed up for spanish since people say it’s more pratical and easier yet i was interested to take french when i was a kid but always had stronger interest in chinese. which one do you think is better/pratical to learn?
If you plan on living in the US the rest of your life, then Spanish is much more commonly spoken and some jobs may want you to know how to use Spanish However, it is best to pick what you like more! Seeing that you said you’re interested in taking French (even if you would prefer Chinese) I would say French is better for you, especially if you want to ever visit France and have a vacation there. Also, it is possible you can dual enroll in a community college with your high school for Chinese. Talk to your counselor and see if this is an option. Otherwise, I recommend picking French or Spanish based on what you want to learn more.
I am a student in Spanish, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
Have a good day!
You’ll have more choices in Spanish but the class make up tend to be different: odds are that there won’t be heritage speakers in your French classes, nor kids who took it ‘by default’ because they had to take a language. So it’s really a matter of preference.
Do check whether there’s a Chinese 101-102 class at the CC. Depending on what level you’ve reached you would start at either level (101= high school levels 1+2).
