hello im new to CC...
i did the may 4 SAT and got 600math 500Cr(because of the lack of time i omitted like 20 questions)500Wr i know it is horrible... but i only studied 2sections as preparation. it was my first time taking the SAT. im planning on spending the whole summer studying and get at least 700math 600cr 600W, i know its gonna be a long road... here is my question: do you recommend me to do test prep courses(money isnt an issue), or do you recommend self studying?

I recommend both. A test prep class will prepare you well but you will need to sit and do several mock tests. You need to work on your own to get to the maximum you can get to without help, then use the test prep to overcome that first threshold. And then when the test prep course is over, you need to work on your own again, this time taking timed tests.
Your scores aren’t horrible for a non-native speaker for whom it was the first test and also, in all likelihood, the first standardized test ever, but it’s definitively not enough to get admitted to the top schools (TOP 100 with top 40 National universities, top 60 national liberal arts colleges). However with these scores, if you are full pay, you can get admitted to the top regional universities, quite a few national publics, and to decent private colleges. (The matter would be quite different if you needed financial aid.) In addition, I’m assuming you’re not of an anglophone or bilingual family, but speak French at home and at school.
The SAT quantitative is easy if you’re heading for any track but L or the communication STMG. Raising your score to 700-750 will not be that difficult if you’re diligent: you already know that stuff. Writing should be easy to improve, too: French students are very good at writing essays since that’s all they do and the other questions deal with grammar and rules you’ve been studying in your English classes. Getting to a 700 is extremely difficult for a non-native speaker but going to 600 or 650 is definitively doable. CR is the hardest to improve and the one you’ll have to work on every day - perhaps keep a journal or a blog in English, for example.
What year (classe) are you in? What schools do you want to attend?

@Myos i also got my SAT score i am a Zimbabwean student, obviously non native speaker.i got Mat620/Cr570/Wr550.i am planning to write again. How can improve my score.

Hi,

Since English isn’t your native language, I recommend that you do take some prep classes. Reviewing by yourself might do more harm than good.

Additionally, you should get a lot of exposure to the English language, do a bit of practice everyday with the different test types. Know the test inside and out.

You still have until October to prep, so you should be fine, just work on it.

Good luck!

College Board has online practice tests (10 of them I think) which you can subscribe to for a small amount of money. If you can’t afford to take private courses, or buy lots of practice books, these College Board online tests are a cheap and excellent way of preparing for SAT’s. My daughter (international) studied herself, with a couple of books and the online set of tests. She got a score of 2330 and was accepted into 8 of the 10 colleges she applied to.

The Online Course is about 70$

You could buy the college board book too. Its cheaper; I bought it for $30.
