My SAT's are disastrous

Oh my God, just heard my scores on the SAT.

First time i took it :

Math : 660
Writing : 430
Reading : 360 (ouch) I just couldn't understand anything

I only got 6 months to improve my scores.

Do you think i've got a chance to improve those ****ty scores?
As a foreigner, what do i need to get to have a shot at NYU?

bump!!!!!!

You probably could have performed better by guessing randomly. Are you a native speaker?

S/He said "as a foreigner"

Those are really low SAT scores, NYU is a farrrrrrrr reach
gpa???

I'd say for NYU... you need IN THE VERY LEAST a 600 in each section. And that's assuming you have pretty good/VERY good EC's, recs, GPA, rank etc.

Is english your first language (I'm assuming you speak french)? I mean, just my opinion, but I think it's unfair if they expect you to make just as good of a score as the best english speaker if you don't speak english nor read it often. But your scores do prove that math is a universal language, haha.

Frenchdude.... Tu viens de France? French grammar is a lot more complex than English grammar, so with a few hours reading a prep book, you should be able to get your writing score to 650+ pretty easily.

As for CR, just keep reading in English! You have 6 months - use them wisely! Il faut que tu lises comme si tu ?tais une machine! Haha, so yeah... If you read like crazy for the next 6 months, your vocabulary and reading comprehension should improve enough to get over 600. Keep in mind that a LOT of English comes from French, so it shouldn't be that hard. Make sure you keep an eye out for all those Latin roots when you find hard words, and the SAT should become "du gateau" ^^

Anyhow, I don't know about NYU's international acceptance rates, but you should probably aim for 2000+. That's a 550 point increase you're looking at, but when your scores are that low, it should be fairly easy to raise your grades. Try to get 700 in math, 650~700 in writing, and 600~650 in critical reading, and voil?, you got your 2000!

SALLUUUT! Your math is probably okay for NYU, BUT you as you already know you need to raise your english, take ^ advice.
I'm surprised you didnt do better on the english, so many of my French friends did really well on the english because they knew most of the complex words, cause A LOT of them have french roots. I remember I got the word "facile" on the test and I knew it meant easy, never knew it meant something in english though mdr. Alors, bonne chance!

wow, how did u do so bad lol

Can you be less rude, karan?

i could, but im totally astonished at those scores. statistically, had you just guessed for every question, you could have beaten that reading score lol.

dude, a lot of ppl get low scores like that. I know a lot of ppl where I live that got 300-400 on the english while getting 700+ on math. Not all people speak English. I don't get why everyone is astonished how a person could score that low? If you took a test that hard not in your native language I don't think you'd do that well either.

thank you
do you know me? I happened to fall under that :D

Yeah but will it affect a lot my admission chances?

Even though english isn't my first language and plan to get a 700+ on the Math SAT I.

Hey
I'm french too and I was wondering what grades you got in Terminale and Premiere

^^

Im in section ES Option Bac international (OIB)

An average mark for me was is 12, pretty good if you're in my school

Worst subject : Spanish : 9/20
Best subject : History : 14/20

What about u?

I'm an exchange student in the US this year and I will go back to France in June to finish high school.
When I left I was in Premiere S section europeenne anglais, I had about 14, I think, with great grades in sciences and math (above 16) and good or average grades in the other subjects. I'm actually studying with the CNED (tu connais?) to stay at the same level than when I left.
Could you PM me about the OIB because I heard about it but I don't know exactly what it is. Is it way better than section europeenne?

NYU - no chance, basically all of your SAT 1 sections need to be above 600, and even then you need at least a 96 unweighted gpa

sry...english is my third language, i started studying in the states 2 years ago, and i had 680 verbal and 720 writing....so it's not an excuse...especially considering my asian mother tongue is not as close to english as french

French dude, in my opinion, you're not getting a lot of helpful posting so don't listen to these posters too seriously. You can definitely raise your SATs to even 800s on all sections. You need to practice productively and think deeply. Reason the required thinking and thought processes required and practice hard.

You do need at least a combined score of between 1800-1900 though. The writing section is probably less important than the Math and Reading.

Ignore the comments about GPA. GPA varies heavily from school to school and colleges are increasingly relying on standardized test scores and essays.
