Freshman Checklist

First Time college parents here! We are attending FASET 6 in August. We are planning on driving down from Boston. Our son will be able to move into his dorm so we will be bringing wahtever is needed for him. Delta posted some cheap airfare for that week, now we're thinking of flying..(saving @ 17 hours 'one way' driving)...so other than his "personal" belongings that can probably fit in a suitcase, what else does anyone suggest we bring that we may need? We figured we can purchase sheets/towels.. when we get there. Do we need to "pack up the minivan" or can we manage to fly?? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

Hi, tedysmom! Congratulations on your son’s choice to attend Tech! We, too, are out of state and our son just finished his freshman year and loved it; I hope your son has a similar experience. As far as moving in, flying is definitely an option; it’s easy to buy anything you need once you get there if he’s not too attached to bringing stuff from home. We drove because son had a suitcase, duffle bag, extra computer monitor, flight case (for locking things up), and a couple of box of cables/video games/miscellaneous books.

Move in went very smoothly. He had his room key within 15 minutes of arriving on campus. There are guys from the Greek Community that stand outside the dorms and help haul all their stuff to their rooms. It was very organized and made for a pleasant experience.

I also really enjoyed the convocation; I’m glad we stayed for it and might even try to convince my husband to stay for it again this year when we bring him back!

Our son ust finished his freshman year, too, and we had similar experiences like GaTechMom (my son LOVES Tech - and we are extremely happy with his progress!).

From Southern VA, we drove (~9 hrs one way), but it was more because we took it as a ‘family-vacation’. We actually purchased a lot of stuff (small fridge, sheets, office-stuff, etc) in Atlanta - no problem at all! We found it’s also quite helpful for us parents: now we know quite well what sort of stores are in the area and we had actually a great time!

From Boston I’d DEFINITELY prefer to fly - the 19 hrs would ‘kill’ me! You can also send some of you son’s belongings via mail, if he has already too much to carry - might be cheaper than an additional suitcase on the flight …

Again, congrats on a great college-choice and good luck to your son! I am quite sure he’ll have a wonderful experience (my son calls it ‘the time of his life’)!

I was a freshman last year and I’m from up north as well.

One of the best things I can suggest is something Bed, Bath, and Beyond offers. You go in, they look up Georgia Tech and print out a suggested supply list, and then you scan anything in the store that you would like. When you get to Georgia the items will be waiting for you to pick up. You pay when you pick up, and you can add or take away from your list at any time. This made move in so much easier because I didn’t have to worry about sheets, pillows, mirrors, lamps, etc.

With that in mind I would definitely suggest flying, though you will need to check some bags. There’s no need to drive.

Thanks for all the Congrats and suggestions…Still trying to decide…though we’re leaning towards driving. (esp now with the checked baggage fees-the cheap airfare isn’t so cheap anymore -and we’d have to rent a car )
We are all very excited…GT has such a beautiful campus. We are already reserved for the Family Weekend in September! (already booked our airfare for that :)
