How do you bring all your stuff? A suitcase is barely enough to fit your clothes, so do you guys usually bring like 2 carry on bags to fit other small stuff like phone/11"-13" tv/subwoofer/XBOX or anything else? Or, do you just ship stuff and then store it at a friends house or something?

i'm from CT but go to NU. i brought my entire life with me and i lucked out and got a double with only myself occupying it. so...my dad flew out with me on move-in day and took some of my clothes/shoes in his own suitcase, since you're only allowed to have so many carry-ons and they charge you extra if it's over 50 lbs (and believe me, it's so hard to not go over that whenever i travel alone).

for everything else that wasn't clothes, i shipped out the week before and picked up in the school mailroom, but other schools may do something different. and for bedding and furniture, i went the Bed Bath & Beyond route: you go to the one in your hometown, scan everything you want and they send a list of your scanned items to the BB&B near your school so you can pick up the same items there.

for the summer, i'm gonna leave most of my things other than my clothes at my grandparents' house since they live about 45 minutes away.

Thanks alot for the replty, tophatin. You're allowed to bring like 2 carry-on items on most airlines, right? Plus, if 1 parent comes with you, there's another 2 haha. The only problem is if you use your parents suitcases/carry-ons and stuff, how do you bring your stuff home? It's not common for parents to come pick you up at the end of the school year, right?

I guess you can always go the Fed-Ex/UPS route, but I'm guessing that's very costly.

I went from MA to William and Mary in VA...at the beginning of the year I just drove all that stuff down to the school...took 12 hours, but it was better than taking it all on the plane.

Damn this got me thinking...My college is prolly about 8 hrs away, so I wonder how I will get everything there in a trip..I guess I we gotta take a fleet of Hondas haha

I'm going to fly to my college. So I will take one suitcase with me... I think I can live with that. I don't need tv,xbox or any.. It is just me and my clothes and shoes.

well im flying. my mom said shell ship everything a little bit before i get there. my college is in new york. but thanx so much tophatin. i didnt kno bb & b did that. very smart.

I fly from PA to MN
Most college have summer storage. I'm going to leave all of my winter clothes here and save myself the trouble of having to trudge back and forth with them. I'm also going to leave all my school supplies, paper, notebooks etc. You don't have to bring all of your basic-life-supplies if there is a store nearby (Target, Kmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ikea) for you to pick it up there. My parents gave me some cash and had me buy all my school supplies, lamps, lights, decor etc after I'd gotten here..yay Target!
I packed 68 pounds of my life into a check luggage duffle, and loaded as much as I could into two carry ons (one for overhead and one small enough to squish under the seat). The rest of my stuff I had packed in boxes and wrapped up and addressed and left for my parents to mail me. That way, when you first get to your dorm you deal with unpacking and meeting people without being overwhelmed with stuff, and the rest comes in the next few days.

with every trip home you learn to pack lighter

I'm from CO and going to school in CA, so we drove my stuff out freshmen year and I've just flown to and from since then. As far as what to do with your stuff over summer break, there are usually small storage areas you can rent out not far from campus (they know they can at least expect annual business from the college students), look for them. Last summer, I shared a 5x10ft one with another student and it cost about $150 total for the summer combined.

Is storage that's provided by the university itself generally cheaper than a private company? I'm guessing so. If I were to do storage I really wouldnt need to store much at all, so I can't imagine it would cost much. Probably $50 +/-

King James, you're only allowed one carry-on item. no matter which way i did it, i was going to have to ship some stuff through ups in boxes. i'm going to do the same for the summer: my winter clothes, mini fridge, lamps, etc. will stay at my grandparents and i'll have to pack everything else into my 3 suictcases. since i brought so much stuff though, including shoes, i'll be shipping the rest of the stuff i need for the summer, i.e., my printer, leisure books, dvds, and all other miscellaneous items.

well, i have my garment bag to put my dresses and jackets in, my huge regular suitcase and then my smaller carry-on suitcase. most people buy suitcases in threes anyways.

All my clothes fit in three suitcases on the flight from VA to CA. Since it was my parents and me flying here, we could have had up to 6 suitcases if we wanted. I only had to ship my computer speakers. When we arrived here, my parents bought all my small needs, like school supplies, laundry detergent, toiletries and some plastic storage bins from the local Target. I ordered a new printer from buy.com, which I had shipped here.

As for summer storage, it looks like I'll be doing Public Storage. It's around $75 per month, so for 3 months it's not that bad.

Regarding carryons: You are limited to one. But you also get a "personal item", which definitely includes laptops, and I think it even includes backpacks. In theory, a purse counts as your personal item, but I'm willing to bet you could get away with a backpack, laptop case, and purse.

Anyway, I fly from MN to CA, and for move-in, having parents fly out with me was unfeasible due to work. I bought two rolling duffel bags beforehand, chosen for the fact that they collapse and then fit under your bed, thus saving dorm space. I took those two, stuffed extremely full, a backpack, also stuffed, and my laptop case. Those contained mostly clothes, bedding (including pillow!), shoes, and other basic necessities. Other stuff I bought out there. We also shipped a box right away, mostly with warmer clothes that take up more space. Since then, I think we had to ship one more box (not counting a care package or two) with dress clothes. I've also taken various things back with me at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
