Okay, so I’ve had orientation and I’ve selected my classes, and right now I have PHI 001, AST 010G (and 010L), FRE 003, and MST 020A. I’ve pretty much decided that I want to switch some of my classes, and I need some advice.

First of all, I’m thinking about taking Math 21A, but I also don’t want to kill my GPA. I’m undeclared, and there’s a slight chance I’ll major in something that requires Math 21. I got a 4 on AP Calc AB, so I’m wondering about how difficult 21A would be for me.

I also want to switch from French 3 to French 21, or drop French altogether. I placed into French 22, but I don’t think I’m ready for it. I am considering getting a French minor, but I don’t want to “waste” five units for 3+ quarters on French language. I’m wondering how difficult French 3 and 21 are (and I suppose 22, also.) And I want to know if it’s worth it to go for a French minor (if I travel abroad, which I want to, it will most likely be to a French speaking county.)

I also want to try to get into ANT 002, but it’s completely full, so I guess I would have to wait list. I’m wondering if it’s worth it to drop one of my classes to wait list for ANT 002, or should I not risk it?

Last question: If I didn’t take the chem placement test at orientation, is it at all possible for me to take Chem 2A Fall quarter?

Even if you can only answer one of my questions, that would be great. Thanks!

WAITLIST WAITLIST WAITLIST!!! if you really want the class then it’s worth it. try to see if you can get the class right when your pass 2 opens up, if not waitlist.

to take any math or chem class you MUST take the placement test. the placement tests can be taken during fall welcome and first week.

Regarding the French classes:
German goes 1 2 3, 20 21 22. I placed into 21 but I started with 20 fall quarter sophomore year, which I felt was a good decision. 1 2 and 3 generally have class every day which was a big deal breaker for me; I don’t want to take a class I have to go to every day. It wasn’t that hard and I only took German 1 2 3(H) in high school. I definitely wasn’t the worst in my class and I didn’t try very hard, but in HS I usually scored in the 95th+ percentile on German standardized tests.
Have you looked at the class requirements for a French minor, or are you just basing that decision off of your love for French? I suggest you take a look at the requirements and think about it.
You don’t need a minor in French to become fluent/go abroad - upper division language courses are generally history/culture/literature related.

Yeah, I would go for it. People drop things during Pass 2 so there’s a chance you can get in.

@digitalrebel: Thanks for the advice. I am highly considering majoring in anthropology, so I definitely want to take a course in it. And so I could take the chem placement test during welcome week, but I would probably not get in the class, would I?

@Hella: French goes 1 2 3, 21 22 23. The French 20 series meets every day, so that’s not a factor for me. I have looked up the French minor requirements, and you’re correct, it requires some culture classes. I suppose I would prefer not to take those classes, but if I end up 2 or 3 classes away from a minor, I assumed it would look good to have the minor. Maybe not, though. And I should have rephrased my last question; I knew I had to take the chem placement test, but I was wondering if there’s any time I can take it before fall quarter.

Astronomy 10G and 10L
English 3
Italian 1 (French 21 is full. Still trying to get into that.)
Anthropology 2

I may end up with a major which requires math… so would it be wise to drop one of these classes to take math 21A? Or would starting calculus my second quarter be okay? I originally planned to add Math 21A, but I noticed that English 3 had open spots, so I decided on that instead (since I’ve heard it can be really hard to get the writing classes.)

It wouldn’t be absolutely terrible to take math your second quarter, but just know that you’d probably be one quarter behind all of your friends in math for the remainder of the series. Now, if you’re considering at all going into engineering (doesn’t appear that you are), you would absolutely want to take 21A fall quarter, because you want to finish math before your junior year, and there are six math courses in all for engineering.

So I’m in Anthropology 2 now, but the prof is Choy and the only rating on ratemyprofessor is 1/5 in all categories (the person was in Anthro 2)… The professor teaching it next quarter (Srinivas) has really good rating. Should I consider switching anthropology to something else? I could take anthropology 002 later on and take Psychology 1 or something right now.
