Hi. Are you allowed to take any of your major courses as a Freshman (if you are interested)? I heard some schools require that you complete ALL general education courses before you are allowed to take any courses related to your specific major. I doubt this applies to Tulane but I would like to confirm this. Thank you!

You can definitely take major courses as a freshman. I would have to go back and read the requirements again, but as I recall them Tulane is fairly easy-going about the timing of the courses. I think you have to take the writing course in your first year, and obviously they prefer first semester. That is pretty normal. And there is the TIDES course, but that’s more for fun and acclimation, and is only 1 credit hour. Otherwise I think you can fulfill your other requirements any time before graduation, although naturally it makes sense to not wait until the last semester to cram them in.

Although it is possible to take major courses as a freshman, many people choose to fulfill most of the general Newcomb requirements freshman year. Second semester some people begin to take one or two classes in their major. The only restriction I am aware of is that some business school classes require calculus and business stat as a per-requisite. Additionally, freshman usually get the last registration time (unless you come in with a lot of AP credits). Because of this many classes in your respective major will be filled by sophomores/ upperclassmen by the time your registration time slot is open (although there is always the wait list)

To my knowledge, you have until graduation to complete your requirements, with a couple exceptions (TIDES, freshman writing course, public service, etc.). Since Tulane accepts AP/IB credits, a number of people wouldn’t be able to fill a full semester courseload with just general requirement classes, myself included. I’m a freshman with sophomore standing, double majoring in German and Economics, and this semester, I’m taking three German courses and one Economics course. Next semester, I’m doing the same, with a second Econ course as well. So it’s very possible.
