Freshman credits

How many credits do you have to take each semester. If in taking freshman bio and chem with a chem lab and an art course and psych… Is that okay?

minimum of 5 classes, 15 credits. (Chem L is only 1 unit and does not count as a “course”.)

http://www.bc.edu/content/dam/files/offices/stserv/academic/pdf/2013academicworkbook.pdf</a></p>

you may be able to answer this question. Would 10 minutes be enough time to walk from Merkert to McGuinn? And also 10 minutes from Devlin to Merkert?

driveshaft: you (or your child,f if you’re a parent) can walk the entire campus in 10 minutes. Merkert is almost directly adjacent to McGuinn. in addition, if for some reason you can’t work 15 credits into your schedule, you can take the minimum of 12 credits to be considered a full-time student. (i’m not sure if this rule holds for first-semester first-years, so you’d have to double check, but i know it can and is done on a regular basis.)

Hi driveshaft, how are you able to see what building potential classes are in? I’m assuming you are an incoming freshman and putting together your schedule for Orientation. How are you able to do this any depth?

you can search for classes in agora. The building and room numbers are noted.

[Course Schedule Request Form](http://www.bc.edu/content/dam/files/offices/stserv/academic/courses/doc/search.agora.html)

An underload will not be approved for Frosh, without a REALLY good reason, such as medical disability (or D1 sport in-season). Otherwise, they’d be behind after the first semester.

fwiw: premeds should only consider an underload when taking organic. :)

Also I have another off topic question. Over April vacation I submitted my housing application. I applied for the heathy alternative lifestyle floor because I really liked what the floor was about. I did not request a room. For my first choice I put a single, second choice a double, and third choice a triple. I really hope to get a room on this floor and hopefully a single! I swear I am not antisocial! I actually know a lot of people going to BC next year! I just like my quite time to focus because I take my academics very very seriously! I plan to join a lot of clubs so I’m not worried about meeting new people. Okay so here is the question… What is my probability of getting my first choice and also a room on this floor?! I submitted my application back in April so I’m really ahead and my answers to the healthy lifestyle app were good (not great but good). Haha I hate waiting!

housing will be processed much later in the summer.

But my guess, and it’s only a guess, is that the few singles are reserved for those with documented medical issues. (And wanting more quiet time to study doesn’t count! lol)

I went on the agora portal to look at the course schedules. I had my classes and times all planned out and then I noticed that some of courses I had chosen said “closed”. Does this mean I can not longer choose that class at that time… How can classes already be closed? I thought you registered for courses at orientation?

Closed courses reflect at least two situations:

1) It is full of upper classmen who registered in the spring;

2) if it is a typical Frosh course, such as Writing 1, the College blocks out spots and opens them only during orientation. That way, attendees each orientation will be able to bid on them.

Either way, once you receive your registration ID during orientation you can check back from time to time – students add/drop over the summer. By constantly checking, my D obtained all of her first choices, even though she attended a later registration time.

okay thank you bluebayou! you have really been such a help!

anytime.

Years ago, I was helped tremendously by the folks on cc, and I just like to ‘pay it forward’.

Good luck to you. BC is a wonderful collegiate experience.

For the fine arts requirement, can an incoming freshman take Photography I if it is not labeled “core” but labeled “one”?
What do psych majors/Lynch School typically take for fine arts requirement? And do they do it freshman year?

all courses that satisfy the arts core are listed in the link below and also on agora (if you click on the course description):

[Arts - Core Curriculum - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/offices/avp/core/coure-courses/core-arts.html)

Thank you @bluebayou!!

I have all of my Science and math requirements completed and One History credit. But I am planning on taking Perspectives so I want to push history to sophomore year. Is it okay to do the fine arts requirement first semester or should I leave it for later and pick something else?

Any recommendations for science core courses for the student who does not like science? D will be a freshman CSOM student. Got credit for AP Environmental, but still needs one more science. Any ideas?

Sure, the best is a Geo course, ‘rocks for jocks’, but D1 registers first, and thus the course closes out within minutes on the first day of senior registration.

Since there are plenty of new science courses being offered, and my D was a science major, I don’t have too many ideas other than search ugbc/peps for reviews of popular professors.

For example, Chem 102: Science and Painting, is taught by McFadden in the spring. He is an excellent prof, but note that the typical STEM profs believe in curves. :)
