Electives?

im majoring in BE and wondering if anyone has any advice on whether or not to take an elective first semester of my freshmen year. would it be too much?

I'm not really sure of your exact schedule (although I know the BE schedule is pretty standard freshmen year), but you should try to take either 5 or 5.5 credits. You can't take any more, and taking less will put you behind.

how many times a week and for how long does a 5 or 5.5 credit course usually meet and last?

there's no such thing as a 5 or 5.5 credit course. courses are 0.5, 1, or 1.5 credits, depending on the type.

language courses meet most days a week; other than that, expect to attend a class for 3 hours of lecture a week, and then 1 hour of recitation, where applicable. labs can be 2, 3, or 6 hours long, depending on the class (be 209 is a 6 hour lab course).

even more technically, we don't use the credit system, we call them course units. It can be kind of hard to take an elective the first year unless you've placed out of classes (the big one is math, also good is any sciences), but take them whenever possible

5.5 credits is anywhere from 3 to 5 classes for a freshman. You'd almost certainly have to take Math/Chem/Physics. That's 4 credits right there. Maybe add Bio and that'd be 5.5.

but i read somewhere that in order to graduate with a degree in most colleges you need 100+ credits. At the rate that you guys are talkng about someone should expect to be in a 4 year college for about 10 years. Do non-freshman courses get more credits? Because I took 2 college courses in 2 local colleges and have recieved a total of 6 credits.

stop making stuff up
you need like 32 or something to graduate
most other colleges are on an hour system
we are not

alright we are not using credits, we are using "course units". A "course unit" is anywhere from around 3 to 6 hours

penn is not most colleges...

besides, what is more trustworthy, a random book, or actual penn students (which we are)?

penn requires at least 32 cu to graduate from the college; engineering has 40 cu, wharton around 36; joint programs and dual degree have quite a bit more.
