Freshman Dorm Advice- University of Florida

@Luvcoffee Summer dorms are for six weeks and basically unrelated to fall residency choices. Even if your student was in the same building for both, odds are it would b diff end rooms/floors.

@JDGatorfan Could you describe how Summer B works? In your opinion, what are some of the benefits and drawbacks to the program? Do kids generally like starting in the summer as opposed to fall?

@RobK2018 I’m not an expert as it has been awhile but kids in summer b get a bit of head start. They usually take 2 classes where you go everyday. It’s a very manageable load. Campus is quiet and the kids get a chance to learn there way around and the Ins and outs of campus life. Back when I was there a million years ago, summer admits were kids who couldn’t get into fall. Today it is all around competitive so that’s no longer the case. UF also requires students to take some summer classes — i think 9 hours. Disadvantage is the kid doesn’t have a summer break. Summer b may start a week or two after graduation so summer jobs, family trips and last hurrahs may be limited. Gainesville also seems devoid of wind in the summer too so it’s really hot. I have also heard that if you want to go Greek, summer b gives you chance to learn the campus before jumping through the rush hoops. I’m sure there is more (and better) advice on this site if you look for it.

May be different recently, think they are trying to put summer B kids into a room thru spring. as first choice the current summer b housing letter it says to contact them if want something different than all 3 terms together and gives the summer b choices. not sure how priority application date works to give preference. at fsu got a number and it was all about giving yourself most opportunities for fall/spring by having a smaller number, had a time to sign up for what was left. later, summer was just ordered in preference and you got what you got and knew you’d be moving between summer b and fall/spring. the way uf handles it is quite nice if like the summer b resident hall list.

I called today about Summer B, because that is what my son got into at UF, you have the same dorm summer, fall and spring, they sent a list of dorms that he could chose from, he paid the $25 after December 1 so he can’t chose his room, didn’t know about that fact until someone told me in January

At FSU this year they had a lottery which was 5 days in the beginning of this month, I did this because my son got accepted to FSU and UF acceptance didn’t happen yet, he had a low number in the 2500 range but I didn’t pay the $250 housing deposit because I had 7 days to pay before the contract expired

All Florida universities make the students take 9 credits over the summer, you can take them online or at a local community college, you just have to check with the school to make sure they will take the class. My one daughter did study abroad, an expensive way to do the 9 credits, and my other stayed the whole summer at FSU and took 10 credits

Did they send the list of dorms to choose from for summer b in the mail? Have not received info yet.

An email was sent yesterday from housing.

I sent my housing application on November 15 or 16th, does anybody how limited I’ll be for dorm selection?

@christianokbye I’m not sure it ever converts to a number so one would really know. When did it open up? We did ours in Sept.

Summer B offerings Buckman and Thomas have the best location, may even having sinks in the room which makes them desirable over other traditional dorms. But they say “AIM ONLY”.

@OldLady21 Pretty sure it opened up at the same time as freshman applications, so around August I think.
