Freshman Dorm Assignment

My daughter has been assigned to Kildahl. I hear former residents are the most enthusiastic at reunions. Any other positive input? Everything we have read mentions how tiny the rooms are. Do people like living in Kildahl, or is an experience to gut through? Can she expect to study in her room? Any insights would be most welcome!

My son hasn’t yet heard about his freshman dorm assignment yet.

Is your D in one of the Conversations programs?

How did they send you the dorm assignment? Snail mail? E-mail?

Yes, she’s in Great Con. Her assignment came in an email letter. It said first year room mate assignments will be sent at the end of July/beginning of August. How exciting!!!

I’ll be in Kildahl too! I did an overnight visit in Kildahl in March and fell in love with the dorm. Even though my host was a little quiet/introverted (like me), she knew everyone walking by & had a great group of neighbors/friends and said she loved the sense of community that the tight quarters fostered. Since the rooms are so small, everyone spends more time in the common space and they get to know each other much better. The common space was huge and the chairs were comfy and (like all dorms) it had a piano! And the student playing was REALLY good.

Kildahl, unlike the other halls, was a definite presence on campus as far as I could see. A group of residents sang us the fight song very enthusiastically in Buntrock Commons when we were all signing in, and they hung a huge Kildahl banner over the cafeteria. I never saw any of the other halls’ residents get together.

The rooms were pretty small, but my host & her roomie had a good study space (beds are lofted, desks underneath) and there was enough room for me to sleep on a futon that they borrowed from some neighbors. I had an amazing time; it was by far the best college visit, and that decided me on May 1st. And ever since I decided, I’ve been hoping to get assigned to Kildahl, even though I visited the other dorms too. Now I soooooooooooooo can’t wait for September 4th!!!

One thing though: bring your own games. Kildahl’s board game collection is a little lacking. That’s hardly a big issue, though.

@catpb - I bet your daughter & I will be hallmates. Last year I’m pretty sure there were 2 floors of guys & only one of girls, although that may change, but we’ll definitely cross paths at some point. And if she’s active on St. Olaf’s facebook pages, I bet we’ve already friended each other. :)

GO KILCON! UM YA YA!!!

Well, my S decided to not apply to any of the Con programs, so we’re still waiting to hear about his dorm assignment. But I’m sure that he’ll like the fact that all the dorms have a piano in them. [He plays, but is planning on taking trombone lessons instead of piano lessons at St. Olaf, since he wants to (eventually) make it into one of the orchestras.]

Animull, your response is so amazing, you have our whole family cheering! I am sending my daughter straight to Facebook to look for you. My daughter is a little reserved, but Kildahl should bring out the best in her. Can’t wait to meet everyone Sept 4th!!!
