Freshman dorms options

Asking for a friend whose D will be a freshman in the fall. What are the best dorms to choose??

Might be too late but here goes:

You will want your friend’s daughter to apply to the Green House program to get into UHeights South dorms. The dorms are the newest on campus and are well worth it.

If she got into the Honors College program, she will probably end up in the UHeights North dorms.

My son’s hoping to get Athletic campus because the gym is right there and has its own dining hall. I personally liked Redstone.

Unfortunately, the housing assignment survey does not let you specify a dorm or area of campus. It’s a very random process. S1 will be a senior next year, S2 a freshman. S1 lived on athletic campus freshman year, Redstone sophomore year. Loved both, but told S2 to request Redstone (however system did not allow him to do so). Said although Redstone is a bit further, many of the dorms have been renovated, as well as the cafeteria.

I think Mom2009 is correct, we just completed the housing contract and you can only request room size (single, double etc.) and a room mate - no choice of a dorm unless you want to live in a learning community.

Our tour guide told us freshman usually get placed in Athletic or Central campus. Redstone, and Trinity are usually upperclassmen.

There are definitely freshmen on Redstone as well. Don’t know much about Trinity.

Yup, just returned from Orientation where we were informed that freshman go where ever there are openings after the upperclassmen select their rooms. Because Redstone and Trinity are popular with older students, there is less space for freshman there, but it is possible. Also Redstone houses the Substance Free dorm which includes freshman who select that choice.

Trinity is made up of alot of different halls. Upperclassman like ones like Jean Mance, which is close to downtown. Mercy Hall, which is farther away, is essentially a freshman dorm with lots of triples. My D was there, did not like it much at first because it is remote, but was ok with it by the end of the year. Its actually closer to many of the classroom buildings than Redstone.

drb, THanks for the information. My son will be disappointed if he gets Trinity I know, that was the one housing area he did not like. We shall see what happens, sounds like everything is on the table!
