Requests for Housing

I'm an incoming freshman for Fall 2013 and I'm so excited to be going to UVM! Soon I have to send in housing forms, but I was wondering if there is a way for me to request a specific hall I would like to be in. So far I've gotten suggestions from current students to be on either the Athletic Campus or the Redstone Campus but STAY AWAY from Trinity. I've done some research online and I think I want to try and dorm in the Harris/Millis halls, but I have two questions.

Is Harris/Millis a good choice for an incoming freshman? If not, any suggestions?

Is there any way that I can request a specific hall to dorm in?

I’m a parent of a sophomore, so I can’t say from experience which are the best dorms (though I do know Trinity is far away and the dorm rooms on main campus are tiny), but I believe the only way to get into a specific dorm would be to apply to one of the Living/Learning communities, which is what my D did. She would highly recommend it if you want to stay away from the really crazy party dorms. Harris/Millis doesn’t have Living/Learning I don’t think, but other places on Athletic do.

As a freshman, you will be placed in a dorm and will not be able to change until December. Freshmen are placed at all dorms, including Harris.Millis.

My son just finished his freshman year and was placed in Redstone campus - he was nervous at first because he thought it was too far from main campus and he had loved the Athletic campus when he went there over the summer. Redstone is where he wants to be from now on - newly renovated, bus to campus every 10 minutes, gym, store, dining hall etc. It is also a very beautiful area. He loves it!

His friends are scattered around and although some seemed concerned at first, they really found a great bond with the students in their dorm and I assure you, even if you end up at Trinity or any of the other more remote dorms, the bus service is great and you will have a very close community at his dorm and will love it!
