I need help choosing dorms for my freshman year. I will be a gabelli business student who wants an outgoing, social life but very focused on academics. I am into sports, movies, and other similar things, but I'm not a huge hard core party/ drinker (never drank before). Which dorms would be the best for my circumstances? Thank you for all the help.

I would look into Queens Court. I lived there my freshman year and loved it. It is a wellness dorm – and although in all honesty not everyone adheres to the wellness policy there is a much higher than average percent of students who do not drink as compared to the school’s population as a whole. It is a small, close-knit dorm which sponsors a number of activities that bring people together. The dorm tends to attract serious students. Living in QC comes with some commitments-- you must attend a short presentation at night twice a week but I found that to be a good study break and a good way to get to know people. If you are interested, spots in this dorm fill up quickly so you must get your housing request in immediately after it arrives at your house. If you get a spot in QC, you will instructed to send a letter saying why you want to live in a wellness environment which you also must send in quickly in order to secure your spot in the dorm.

I was in a similar situation 2 years ago and I choose to live in Jogues for the MANRESA program. You get a lot of perks for living in the integrated learning community such as frequent events and such in addition to being in a special Ground Floor (business intro class) your first semester. And with my experience the kids there are a great blend of being focused on academics and also having a great social experience.

I’m not sure if you can do the Manresa program if you are in Gabelli – you should double check.

My D wanted Queens, but didn’t get in so was assigned Tiernney Hall. It is a nice, smallish dorm and fairly modern. She meet kids from ALL OVER the US and other countires; she made friends with kids from California, Arizona, Florida, Sweden, Spain, and Taiwan. She had some fun there her first year. BTW she is not a drinker…

While Queens is great, it is a more serious, academically oriented dorm. Don’t feel bad if you don’t get into Queens Court; you will make friends and have fun at whatever dorm you get into. A good (or bad) college experience is mostly what you make it. As the majority of Fordham students tend to love their time there (myself included going back over 30 years), if you don’t like dorm life there, you probably wouldn’t like college life anywhere, so wherever you dorm, make the most of it: make friends, join clubs, tour NYC with a group, etc. This is perhaps the best time of your life at a top school, so it’s up to you to make it happen!

I know a couple of my D’s friends got assigned to Queens already.

She’s hoping for Alumni South herself.

Alumni North and South are nice, modern dorms with a really eclectic group of kids with athletes mixed in, but mostly upperclassmen. The bond of Alumni North/South residents are fairly strong from what I hear. I like that it is near Rodrigue’s Coffee House.
