Hi. I am going to be a freshman during the fall of 2013 in the School of Engineering. On the orange paper the admissions mailed me, it says I have to choose five electives. However, when i look at the sheet of electives, I mainly see electives that pertain to history (AND I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE ANYTHING RELATED TO HISTORY). Also, I don't know which electives are interesting. I would really appreciate it if you tell me which electives are worth taking and intriguing because I do not want to enroll in a class that is a complete bore.

P.S. Currently, I am planning on being a mechanical engineer.

A lot of electives are in history departments or related fields, so that’s why there are so many history classes on the sheet. From the five electives you choose, you are going to receive one of them on your schedule for the fall. You can always drop this class and try to pick up another one if you don’t like the class, so don’t be too worried about the five that you list on the sheet.

General Psychology is a very popular choice since the classes are in general very easy. The subject matter can be interesting as well. There are also many different upper level psychology classes to take, so many people take General Psychology and then a 300 level psych class to complete part of their SOE humanities requirements (which are on the academic affairs portion of the SOE website, definitely worth reading over).

Death and Afterlife is another popular class for freshman/sophomores. It is notoriously easy due to large attendance credit and multiple choice exams straight from a small textbook. Subject matter could be interesting or terribly boring depending on the person. It’s about notions of the afterlife in various religions of the world.

I can’t really speak for any other classes since I didn’t take any lower level humanities, but what you can do is try to find past syllabi or course descriptions from the various department websites and get a feel for what the class is about

ok thank you Rhetorical13. very helpful information

P.S. 13 is my favorite numero ;)
