Hi, I am currently an undergrad freshman at NU studying engineering. Classes are alright, I am struggling somewhat in chem and I find my Engineering Design class to be a lot of busy work, but besides that classes are fine. Now, I have always been interested in architecture and looked into architecture as a major before applying to colleges but didn't take the option because there seemed to be a lot of schooling involved before you get your license and more schooling=more debt. So I settled on engineering.

But, after being here for a few months I'm not sure if engineering is completely right for me. I can definitely do it, except for chem lol, but architecture is just much more interesting and appealing to me. My elective is American Architecture and although its basically a history class I find each class fascinating and want to learn more about architecture history and actually becoming an architect.

So, I am wondering if it is possible to duel major in architecture and engineering and what that course load might look like. I am meeting with my counselor soon about AP credit and plan to bring this up as well. If anyone could give their input on the architecture school here at Northeastern that would be great and if anyone has any experiences with switching majors or duel majoring that would also be great. Thanks for any replys.

No it isn’t. Dual majors are specifically designed by the colleges, departments and advisors and can’t just be set up out of thin air. You also can’t Double major because to do so, both majors have to be in the same college.

To switch you’d have to apply to the internal transfer program to switch out of the College of Engineering and into CAS… well, whichever one of the three CAS colleges that architecture is in- can’t remember. It is usually pretty easy to switch into CAS, but architecture is a very tough major and they start out on hard material right away, so the architecture advisor probably won’t let you transfer into it unless you not only really really prove you want to do it, but also prove that you can fit it into your schedule and still graduate on time. Even being a freshman, if you didn’t come in with a lot of transfer credit, you might have to give up a co-op because some classes have to be taken in a certain order.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to meet with an College of Architecture advisor after Thanksgiving break. I have AP credit for English and History and I have taken Calc 1 this year if that matters. I hope to be allowed to transfer. Thanks again

Untrue regarding double majors having to be in the same college. I’m currently double majoring in Computer Science and Economics. Completely different colleges, and there is no dual/combined major available.

To figure it out, you must speak with your advisors. I talked to advisors of both the college of Information Sciences (the CS one) and the College of Humanities to set up the classes I needed to take to satisfy the requirements.

Well I remember them flat out telling me two years ago that I couldn’t do Chemistry and Business as a double because they were in different colleges. Maybe CS advisors are just nicer. Don’t know about Engineering though.
