freshman fest - hillel

Does anyone know someone who attended the freshman fest sponsored by hillel? From what I understand, my daughter can move in 1 1/2 days earlier and attend special events sponsored by hillel? Sounds like a great way to meet people before school starts. The only draw back I told my daughter is that she will have to sleep in her dorm room by herself for 2 nights. I don't know how she is going to like that.

My DD did it and really enjoyed it. Your DD won’t be sleeping in the dorm by herself. There were many girls on my DD’s floor who were involved. Maybe they all slept in the common room those first nights? Can’t remember, but they weren’t alone. I would definitely recommend it.

Can someone tell me what the freshman fest is that you speak of? Haven’t heard anything about this.

Freshman Fest is sponsored by Hillel. If signed up, you can move in on 8/25 at 5:00. Hillel then sponsors dinner Thursday night, activities and meals on Friday. Hillel charges $50 and the school charges $50 a night for each night you are there before move-in day.

Sounds like a great idea! I think my S is going to be there for sure!

My D will be there too!

Here’s the link for anyone wanting more info:

[University of Delaware Hillel](http://www.udhillel.org/freshmanfest.html)

I don’t know about Univ of Delaware, but, generally there are other kids who are moving in early for a variety of reasons… such as sports, marching band, intl, ra’s etc

My D will be attending freshman fest sponsored by Hillel. A few of her friends did it last year and really enjoyed it. They loved moving into the dorms early and they only participated in the activities that they wanted to.

How do kids learn about this? Does Hillel send out an invitation directly to the students?

I don’t know if Hillel sends out invitations - It is mentioned on their website. My S is all registered for it, and I am looking forward to moving him in before the huge crowds get there!

I think my D first found out about it on some Delaware facebook site.

move in weekend is amazing. you will get a staggering list of activities later in the summer

Your daughter should definitely do FF. You can find threads here from previous years. As someone else said, it’s great to meet a bunch of people before the madness of everyone moving in. And they may end up becoming involved with Hillel, which is not a bad thing.

What happens when one student attends FF and their roommate arrives during the normal move in day? I guess the FF student should not decide how the room is going to be set up without consulting their roommate, correct?

misterbill - where are the threads from previous years located?

My older D did something similar a few years back and it’s definitely more courteous and conducive to a good roommate relationship to wait before doing anything major or taking the “good” side or “good” furniture. Of course your student may have to choose a bed for the two nights there before the roommate arrives, and will hang things up etc. If the room layout allows your student might be able to conform her own space (like bunk her bed etc). But you should be prepared to make adjustments, not leave all the bad furniture for the later arrival etc.

( I will admit though that we did do some scrounging around in other unmoved into rooms to look for an unbroken chair, and dresser draw)

They can certainly talk on line about some of this come August when they find out who their roommate is and take a look at the likely layout of the room online
